Baltinglass are Wicklow senior football champions for the first time in five years thanks to a 1-20 to 0-15 victory over Carnew Emmets in Aughrim this afternoon.

The sides had been all square on 0-6 apiece when John McGrath hammered in Baltinglass’s goal in the 20th minute and a two-pointer from Mark Jackson helped them open up a five-point lead.

Ben Brosnan and Jackson swapped scores from beyond the arc in the run up to half-time to leave the scoreboard reading 1-13 to 0-9 when the sides went in.

Chris Heaslip and Adam McHugh sent over points early in the restart for the would-be winners as their lead increased to double scores.

Carnew lost Brosnan to a black card as the game entered its closing quarter of an hour, while on the other side Heaslip would be dismissed after picking up a black card and caution.

Tommy Keogh sent over the next two scores for Baltinglass, including a two-pointer, to extend their advantage ahead of Brosnan coming back on and grabbing a consolation point for Carnew who rounded off their tally with a late Sean Murphy two-pointer.

The victory marks a 24th county SFC success for Baltinglass, with Carnew’s dreams of a senior football and hurling championship double in the Garden dashed in the process.
