Abbeylara ended Mullinaghta’s Longford senior football championship hopes thanks to a 1-16 to 1-15 win at Higginstown yesterday evening.

In the end, Ciaran Scanlon’s last gasp free proved the difference between the sides as Abbeylara top Group A in the Sean Connolly Cup race while Mullinaghta drop into the relegation playoffs.

The 2024 winners held a 0-11 to 1-4 lead at half-time and, after their opponents trimmed the difference back to a point, Robbie Smyth’s penalty in the 41st minute would get Abbeylara back motoring again.

Mullinaghta came with another push and eventually with a David McGivney two-point free in injury-time, but Scanlon sent over at the other to break their hearts.

There was late drama as well at Michael Fay Park where Daryl Carrigy’s point at the death secured a 0-14 to 1-11 draw for Ardagh Moydow against Rathcline.

The result sees Ardagh Moydow claiming fourth spot over Mullinaghta on the head-to-head rule, while Dromard are also into the competition’s quarter-finals thanks to a 1-16 to 1-14 win against Killoe Young Emmetts in Group A, with the holders also through to the knockout stages despite the defeat.
