Familiar pairing in Monaghan SHC final

Truagh aim to break new ground when they take on defending champions Castleblayney in Sunday’s Monaghan senior hurling championship final.

Two sides bidding to write a different type of history on the big day…

While standard bearers Blayney will be bidding for a third successive county senior hurling crown and ninth in ten years when the sides cross swords in a repeat of the league final at Monaghan town on Sunday afternoon, Truagh are appearing in only their fourth ever SHC decider and have yet to take the spoils.

The Red & Blacks’ three previous final appearances were all against today’s opponents – in 2019, 2020 and last year.

Both sides came through tough semi-final tests in a dramatic double-header at Clontibret two weeks ago, the holders seeing off 2023 winners Inniskeen by 2-21 to 2-16 thanks to goals from Leo Moloney (1-7) and veteran campaigner Brian McGuigan, while former Armagh captain David Carvill and Conor McKenna netted in Truagh’s 2-9 to 1-11 victory over Monaghan Harps.
