Mayo and Galway are up-and-running in the Connacht U20FC after registering wins over Sligo and Roscommon last night.

Darragh Beirne upstaged fellow senior Kobe McDonald by scoring 0-6 as Mayo edged out Sligo by 0-17 to 0-15 in Tubbercurry. Scores from Beirne, Oisin Deane and McDonald helped the visitors to a 0-10 to 0-7 interval lead before they extended their advantage to five after the restart.

But with Eli Rooney helping himself to an eye-catching 0-11, the Yeats County fought back to level at 0-15 apiece, only for Beirne to win it for Mayo with two late points.

In Tuam Stadium, early goals from Shay McGlinchey and Cian Mitchell set Galway up for a 3-10 to 1-11 victory over Roscommon.

Niall Heneghan opened the scoring for the Rossies with a two-pointer, but the hosts then took control before a John Curran major cut the gap to four, 2-5 to 1-4, at the break.

A third Galway goal from Matthew Collins put them seven points clear with 10 minutes remaining, and there was no way back for the visitors after that.
