Which way did you suggest going again Viking?, tried looking for your post about it but couldn't find it, google is sending me up through Belfast then back down the coast, cheers and safe travels to everyone else hitting the road

Up through Belfast will be quickest, especially on a Sunday. No work or school traffic. I plan to take the ferry from Portaferry on the way home, maybe go round through Newcastle, show the kids some of the stunning County Down scenery. The ferry leaves Portaferry on the quarter hour every half an hour, so 4.15, 4.45 etc.

Jaysus that was a tough tough game.

We were absolutely flying and just slow coming out in the second half.

Eamon Wickham was brilliant in the closing stages. Jack Redmond is starting to become a bit of a leader. A very important score again this week when the game was in the balance.

Conor hearne finished very strongly, and moving reck to 6 changed the game when we were in trouble.

We'll take the points and move on. Carlow will be no pushover next week.

I said it before and I say it again. We need to stay up in the liam mccarthy. First game against Kildare is our all ireland, Sadly

2 points dug out but that was a really below par performance in the second half to say the least, our lack of size in particular the half back line was glaring although I thought Wickham finished the game strongly. Our first touch as well was poor. Think Down also scored directly from every free we gave away.

Chin or no Chin next week there needs to be a big improvement.

Nice to see a good Wexford following there today also for a game in February 300+ KM away.

I said after last week not too judge anything playing in those conditions. However as tier 2 team I'd expect us to be beating Down by 9 to 12 points.

Sadly we are some way behind the top teams. 10 weeks to championship. Need to blood a few more in the next few league games.

Then focus on staying in Liam Mccarthy some championship time.

Couldn't make the game myself.

Saw the hoganstand report says we were up 0-20 to 0-12 at half-time? We only scored 0-7 points in the entire second half? Anyone at the match give any reason for such a massive fall-off in scoring? Were we playing into a massive wind in the second half?

Carlow put 10 points on Down at home last weekend, so I expect them to be targetting our game. We're vulnerable and they are more than capable of an upset.

Two more things from today

Never once looked like scoring a goal until the end and would only count that as half a chance between Hearne and Jack Redmond granted he had pulled up a min earlier. I don't think there's any denying Clare or Dublin even with half strength teams would score 2 or 3 goals at least against a team like Down.

Great goal and delighted for him last week but Fannings long range frees are extremely frustrating to say the least, thought there was 1 or 2 of those today that might've been in Ross Banvilles range or even worth playing in to the forwards

I don't know if 0-27 (0-20 from play) is really that good a score to put up against Down (Although could still argue it's a good score)

But conceding 0-25 (0-15 from play) against Down is not good

And it ties in with us conceding 4-18 against Westmeath and 2-22 against Antrim in recent years

Defence is a bigger issue for me right now than the attack, we'd be better off playing a sweeper in the Championship

There were a few starters today who I was surprised by, thought some on the bench would've started ahead of them, thought David Codd and Darren Codd would've started after last week and thought Eoin Whelan would've been given a go, obviously we don't know what's going on in training, I'm guessing (and hoping) Keith has a good explanation behind all of it

Another tight game against a lower ranked team.
Very good first half but the wheels came off the wagon in the 2nd half.
However they eventually came to grips with Down in the last few minutes and got the winning scores to snatch victory.
Never easy playing northern teams and Down have some very good hurlers.
We on the other hand have to be patient.
We are giving lads like Redmond, Breen, Wickham, Regan, Banville and Darren codd plenty of gametime. So important for the development of this team.
A win is a win and good to get but we are very much a work in progress but with guys like Chin, Shane Reck Molloy and maybe Jippo to return and provide much needed experience we may manage to get out of 1B.
It must be said though the Dublin and Clare games will undoubtedly be extremely tough and a win in both would be invaluable and bring the younger lads on in leaps and bounds.
Carlow next up and it might be our biggest challenge to date. Home advantage and a decent local support should see us over the line

Woeful considering Down who I've huge respect for, will be lucky to finish in the top 3 of the Joe McDonagh. Outlook is not good unfortunately. All these new players will need time and lots of it to have any hope of competing in the near future. Hopefully we improve as the season goes on and the ground hardens up and Chin comes back in to steady the ship but he is not going to do it on his own anymore.

Just home, what a great day out, capped off by seeing 2 dolphins so close you could touch them on the ferry back to Strangford!
Great welcome from some very passionate hurling people up there, and Ballycran hurling club have facilities that would be up with the best in the country.
We were 10 up at one point in the 1st half.
The players and management shouldve been expecting a big Down fight after halftime, Im sure they got ate they were so poor in the 1st half. I suspect the talk in our dressing room was to keep it cool and keep hurling, we just seemed completely unprepared for the intensity Down brought after halftime. Think we only won 2 or 3 rucks in the first half hour of the 2nd half.
At the same time even though alot of our lads looked gassed at the 3/4 mark, credit our lads for digging deep in the last 5 minutes of normal time and the 5 minutes of injury time. They started winning the kind of ball they werent winning for the 1st half hour of the 2nd half.
All the subs didnt seem prepared for the pace of the game when they came on, maybe they need to get some contact in, shouldering or rucking, before they come on? Just a left field thought.
Anyway, we got the 2 points which was what we went up for, alot of our younger lads got more gametime, some like Wickham and Redmond are starting to look like they belong at Senior level too which is very encouraging. James Byrne and Ross Banville were pretty good in the 1st half also for 2 lads just starting out really at Senior intercounty.
Onto Carlow in the Park, which will be a very tough game. We really need to start with plenty of speed to what we are doing, and raise the level again after halftime. If we go to sleep again we won't beat the lads from over the Barrow.

Suppose if we won the games by more you'd be saying its only the League.....
If Kildare is going to be your all Ireland then try make it up to Newbridge to see the game, and then stay at home for all your "support" is worth to the lads.

We were playing uphill in the 2nd half, but the breeze that there was was across the pitch.
The reasons we were poor in the 2nd half are probably only known to the lads themselves. Hopefully they learnt something from it.

Im sure Keith doesn't have to explain anything to us. Its a results based gig he has, and he won't be judged by the people who matter until after the Leinster Championship concludes.
