Mickey Harte was a big supporter of the Champions Round idea. It was very similar to the final 8 playoffs in the AFL. Top 4 essentially playoff for semi-finals, with losers into quarter-finals. 5-8 playoff for quarter-finals without a safety net. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8385 - 06/12/2024 10:56:24 2582606 Link 0 |
A rubbish idea if ever there was one.

Disagree. All 4 provincial winners knocked in 2010.

I like the AFL playoff format too - it operates in the Liam McCarthy Cup and I have it in my AILC idea. omahant (USA) - Posts: 2940 - 06/12/2024 14:55:12 2582642 Link 0 |
And so say all of us.

The qualifiers don't have to come back. 1. Provincial finals & All-Ireland Round 1 (7 league qualifiers and Tailteann winner) 2. All-Ireland Round 2 (4 provincial runners up and 4 Round 1 winners) 3. Provincial Champions Round & All-Ireland Preliminary quarter-finals (4 Round 2 winners) 4. Quarter finals (2 Champions Round losers and 2 preliminary quarter-final winners) 5. All-Ireland semi-finals. The 2018 Super 8s was a glimpse of what the Champions Round would have looked like: Kerry v Galway and Dublin v Tyrone. The other Round 1 Super 8s from 2018 were a glimpse of what the Preliminary quarter-finals would have looked like: Kildare v Monaghan and Tyrone v Roscommon. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8385 - 06/12/2024 19:10:29 2582666 Link 0 |

How will that format improve the standard and reduce the gap in standards of intercounty football from top to bottom?

Jarlath Burns was making the point that the championship should be a blunt instrument. The league is there for incremental improvement. The Tailteann Cup could still retain group stage for lower ranked counties. When Cork lose to Kerry in a Munster semi-final and lose to Tyrone in an All-Ireland Round 1, do they really need a third game? If Clare lose to Kerry in a Munster final and Tyrone in an All-Ireland Round 2, do Clare really need another safety net game? legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8385 - 06/12/2024 21:56:30 2582681 Link 0 |
Anyone else seeing all the videos online on how the NBA is dying ? The 3 pointers are getting a lot of the blame. I don't watch it, but GAA have copied from it, I would hope Jim Gavin is aware of the decline of interest in NBA Kew (Galway) - Posts: 115 - 06/12/2024 23:59:38 2582689 Link 0 |
Time will tell. The 2 pointer sounds good. Defences have to push out. The risk of taking on the long range score will be rewarded if successful.

What have Jarlath Burns or Munster football got to do with my question in response to your post?

The big word there is "if" …. A load of long range shots going wide will soon turn people of this idiotic idea….!

The key will be if the 2-pointer is successful more than 50% of the time - thereby, >1 pt per attempt, better than the close range point.

Some teams might quickly realise they're wasting time for lower percentage 2 pointers when results would have been better taking quicker, high percentage, 1 pointers. It'll also be easier for teams to quickly pick out their opponents 2 point kickers and find means of minimising their output. Or maybe not. It'll be fascinating to see team tactics under these new rules.

The 2 pointer is throwing up interesting scenarios already. Defences will have to watch out for it, forcing them to push out some bit. If a 2 pointer is not on, a pass outside the 45 can setup an attacking mark where an advantage could lead to a goal. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8385 - 10/12/2024 08:48:06 2582970 Link 0 |
Over emphasis on three point shooting and much less contact being allowed are slowly killing basketball. Football will go the same way.
