Solid win without being spectacular and we could have been second. Meath were poor but we played some nice football up top. I'd be hoping for galway next week with their injuries. We usually loose to tyrone in important games and mayo based on today would be to strong for us.

We made heavy work of that but a win is a win…My earlier post about Meath being the 2nd worst team in sam proved right… amazing how far off the pace meath are… lucky we were in the Weakest group by a country mile… also amazing how we have regressed in 12 months…however sum positives today so hopefully give next week a good rattle…

That was a handy group and we really blew 2nd spot today. Can't be too frustrated with the team as you could fill a strong 15 with the lads we are missing. Really felt loss of o connell and Darren Hughes today in those last 15 mins as we were cleaned out at midfield. Agree Galway the best bet of the three but be probably our old friends Tyrone

Felt like a defeat leaving Cavan today. We should be going into next week looking at a home game.
When Vinny ran the bench Monaghan lost all momentum. We were completely dominating Meath you simply couldn't get out of their own half. Nine points up when McBennett scored the goal. We collapsed.

The first 20 minutes of the second half was the best football we played all year.

Lavelle was outstanding at fullback and coming forward. Ryan Wylie rolled back the years. Mohan was very good in midfield and the half forward line caused meath all sorts of problems.

Fingers crossed O'Tooles injury isn't at bad as it looks.

Hi Veterngaa,

I think we may have to agree to differ here, and I should add that I am watching from abroad rather than being able to see the game as a spectator, but a final few observations which may or may not wide of the mark:

- we should, of course, acknowledge and appreciate the game's evolution, so I am in no way advocating static positions;
- however when Beggan does advance, what's our tactical mitigation ? Do we systematically have someone providing zonal cover ? I ask because both today and also in the Ulster Championship it tended to feel that the moment there was a turnover, we had no one anywhere close to minding the shop, and it was a flat panic sprint (I don't just mean when we were chasing the game late in Clones);
- so my concern is that against better teams than Cavan and Meath, at the business end of the Championship, a defence that has conceded goals looks even more vulnerable.

But look, the teams I mention that did take advantage are out, and we are still in.

Vinny shouldn't have taken Jack off . He was like an outhalf & dictating the direction of play around the middle. We lost this composure bigtime when he went off ! Why Garland was taken on I'll never know. Great to see Ryan Wylie back to his best. Lavelle & Mohan immense. Pity we can't play Mohan at FF. Young Conlon from Rockcorry did well for Meath when he came on !

Ronan Jones coming on changed the game, if Meath had started him as named it could have been much different.
Monaghan got sloppy when 9 ahead and started chancing needless things instead of protecting the ball. Nightmarish game management. Did they not know they had 2nd in the bag?
Davy Garland coughed up two possessions, a wide from McCarthy after clever play by Mooney, McManus into the keepers hands, McManus again blocked and Beggan driving the 45 wide, Beggan kick-out over the sideline and Mohan kicking the ball away, Bannigan handpass off the post. Add that to the goal gifted up in first half and it all cost them a home PQF Hard to blame all that on the subs. Joe McQuillan did Monaghan no harm either. Raging.
Fair play to McBennett, Lavelle, O'Hanlon and Ryan Wylie who had good days out. Good luck to young Wilson and Ryan O'Toole who did their bit before coming off injured.

Must be a huge relief for the team to finally get a win, mentally they must have taken a battering over the last number of months. Great to see us go 9 pts up in the second half, not so great to see Meath come back at us, was it a bit of a mental wobble from the team, possibly.
We're in the pot tomorrow morning, we may not have home advantage but it's not as if Clones has been lucky for us this year. If we had finished in 2nd spot we could have potentially got Cork, no thanks. Its Galway, Mayo or Tyrone, 3 teams we're well familiar with. Best of luck to the lads next weekend, we're not gone yet.

Actually they have played 3 games in the All Ireland. Won 1, Drawn 1, Lost 1. Same record as last year and that led to an All Irelan semi-final. Makes for a great championship.

throw up the stats there, wish i had that inside info. would say crowds are down (if they actually where) to weather and a push on silage.

All ire series has it flaws but its only knockout now. up until now is a serious opportunity for counties to blood players and perfect systems. Players wanted more games and they're getting it. I would say the chasing 11 have closed the gap on Dublin with Dublin also getting stronger. great news for football.

some people never be happy. granted we let an opportunity for second slip but i don't really care about that. good to use the bench and keep legs as fresh as possible for next week. quick turnaround will separate the men from the boys.

So its Galway in Salthill next Sat or Sun. Unfortunately, we don't have the same experienced squad as we did back in 2018 when we had a famous victory there to reach the semi-final against Tyrone.
Due to injuries, we have no option now but to play your younger players, which is no bad thing. Its a free shot for Monaghan, everyone will expect an easy victory for Galway but Monaghan going in as big underdogs is always how like it.
Not too sure how many Monaghan supporters will make the long-ish trip to Galway though, but these younger lads deserve our continued support.
Our Injury (or Opt out) list though would all be first team starters..
Duffy
Boyle
O'Connell
Hughes
Ward
Great to see McBennett step up and make his mark yesterday, Irwin gave away the ball for the Meath goal but apart from that played well and got a nice point in the 2nd half when Monaghan were on top.
Lavelle was excellent but I thought Mohan was immense yesterday, he led the fight to Meath in the 2nd half and took a brilliant high catch to inspire the team and supporters in the 2nd half.
How terrible were Meath though, ok, they got the last 7 points of the game but at that stage Corey had emptied the bench and Monaghan seemed to take their foot of the gas a bit, pity, as we could have easily had 2nd place in the group if we had to keep the 2nd half pace up.

Did the championship start 5 months ago?
Monaghan have only lost once in the AI series and are still in it.
You will be able to put us out of our misery next weekend.

Louth got Cork. I'd rather Galway. The way Cork play they'd run through us. Galway be red hot favourites media will write them up. Suits us fine. No pressure on monaghan. Awful year so far but message has to be that counts for nothing now all about next weekend a chance to turn it all round.

I see on the Galway forum they are talking about a Convicing Win and resting some lads for the following weekend... this is eactly how Monaghan will like it. If Galway are complacent, who knows, a shock might be on the cards. Even with our injury list, we have the players if the attitude is right.

I thought McBennet too had an excellent game. The last time he started he made a few mistakes, had a few sloppy passes. This time he played a much tighter game and made a massive contribution.

The fade out at the end was very disappointing as 2nd place was available in the group. However, that's now over and a big game to look forward too next. Galway will be hot favourites and fancy winning this one. That's not a bad place for Monaghan to be in.

Alot will depend on injuries. A half fit comer and Walsh will clean that monaghan full back line. Galway are inconsistent though as shown yesterday but they do have alot of quality in their team. Could be a slow pondorous game which will suit monaghan.
