A Big Game Saturday we have lost experienced players and have a few injuries. It had to happen some time and now the younger lads need to step up to the plate. But it will bring ups and downs so we all have to have patience. St Mary's are producing excellent teams from 1st year on so it's a real plus going forward. jobber (Westmeath) - Posts: 1637 - 23/01/2025 19:50:31 2587215 Link 1 |
Game off due to frozen pitch. No word on new fixture. BigSur (Westmeath) - Posts: 1181 - 25/01/2025 13:39:48 2587454 Link 0 |
There' is a window I think in the middle two weeks of February so probably one of them.It won't be easy going to Belfast short of match practice and with so many young players.

Might have a couple of lads back for that like McCormack etc hopefully

Good to hear of Niall O'Brien, Killian Doyle, Davy Glennon etc coming back into the fold as the league progresses. Darragh McCormack back available for this weekend vs Antrim too which is a bonus but unfortunately Niall Mitchell, David O'Reilly and a couple more still injured. Great opportunity for some other young players like David Hickey and Dean Ennis to give the management a headache. Very tough going up to face a wounded Antrim with what will be a very young outfit, but we've plenty of quality. A draw would be a great result up in Belfast while we are understrength. Agreed but how fit are they. When will they be ready to play.O Reilly must be getting close.Others seem to have constant injuries.. I think Belfast will be hugely difficult against a wounded animal on their own patch with a lot to prove.A win or even a draw would be a huge boost. jobber (Westmeath) - Posts: 1637 - 29/01/2025 16:36:38 2588390 Link 0 |
You'd imagine O'Brien and O'Reilly would be at a decent level of fitness given Castletown went right into December more or less last year. O'Reilly's injury was an upper body one so probably has been able to do some form of running work. Huge task up in Belfast for sure, it'll be a baptism of fire for many of the young players but I suppose it'll show Bulfin who is up to the task. It's a great opportunity for a lot of the young lads before the likes of Doyle, O'Brien, Glennon and Co come back in.

Id imagine we won't see Doyle till Mcdonagh if then.I think he is in Australia till end of February.IMO if Glennon and O Brien are fit and training they are needed now the youngsters need a few experienced players around.

Thinking long term with O Brien and Glennon not on 26. Probably right call longterm.Lets be honest hard to see us scoring enough to get anything from this.We need to see a massive effort from all 20 that play. jobber (Westmeath) - Posts: 1637 - 01/02/2025 14:58:05 2588769 Link 0 |
We'll see how things go. It's definitely a mammoth task in Belfast, we've a very young panel tomorrow with a lot of the experienced players to come back in, along with David O'Reilly who's also very young but in my opinion is the best forward in the county. Hopefully we put in a decent display tomorrow and the young players starting and whoever comes off the bench show up well. I would take your hand off for a draw.

How can you let a fella who's in Australia just waltz back into a panel when the rest of the panel are slogging away?

I didnt say he should be in nor did i say he should not.I merely said he wont be back till february and if he features It wont be till Mcdonagh which begins mid april. But you would have told Lohan in no uncertain terms to run Shane O Donnell? Mcdonagh is our All Ireland and if that player who has given good service till 2022 returns in top physical shape 7 weeks of good Hurling should get him ready. But as I said if he returns in top shape? jobber (Westmeath) - Posts: 1637 - 01/02/2025 18:25:34 2588781 Link 0 |
Hurling wise he will be fine when he comes back and given he has been named on the panel you'd imagine he's following some sort of programme out abroad to keep himself in decent shape too.

Easy Antrim win. Unsurprising and I think we could be in a for a tough year. There's some guys on the panel that wouldn't start for our top 3 senior clubs westmeathgaa11 (Westmeath) - Posts: 308 - 02/02/2025 15:58:47 2588903 Link 0 |
Yeah expected result however its only Bulfin's first game and a long trip up to Belfast where most struggle. we had a very young panel, I will reserve judgement until after a few games and after a few notable players come back. Very reliant on David Williams today, 0-12 from him and was our only threat we need more from around him. Antrim having a tough game vs Dublin under their belt and us coming in with no competitive action didn't help either. This league will certainly be a transition period for us and we must be patient as supporters. I remember a similar transition period around 2011/2012 when we had a lot of quality young hurlers coming into the Senior set up but took them time to find their feet and shipped some defeats along the way.

Thats Cadtletown,Lough Lene Gaels and Clonkill right? I dont disagree the year could be tough but its our first competiive game, in Belfast so lets have some patience. With Carlow beating Waterford id say 5 points Will be need to stay up. jobber (Westmeath) - Posts: 1637 - 02/02/2025 16:34:01 2588918 Link 0 |
