Robbie Greville has become the third Westmeath hurler to announce his inter-county retirement in a fortnight.
In another blow to new manager Kevin O'Brien, this year's captain has joined Tommy 'Jogger' Doyle and Darragh Clinton in deciding to call it a day. Described as a 'true role model on and off the field' by Westmeath GAA, Greville hails from a famous Raharney hurling family. His father Sean was a brilliant Westmeath goalkeeper in the 1970s and '80s, his twin brother Gary also played county up until recently, older brother Johnny is the current Meath hurling manager, another older brother Paul is a former county dual star, while sister Pamela has won All-Ireland junior and intermediate camogie medals with the Lake County in the past decade.
Robbie himself won a Joe McDonagh Cup medal in 2021.
"Since making his senior debut in 2011, Robbie has been an outstanding servant to Westmeath hurling," a county board statement read.
"A proud member of the Raharney club, he has represented his county with unwavering commitment, leadership and passion for more than a decade. His influence both on and off the field has been immense, and he has long embodied the values and spirit of Westmeath hurling."
