1. Oisin McDermott 2. Liam Kelly 3. Ciaran Mccarrick 4. Dylan Garrigan 5. Conor Quigley 6. Liam Stafford 7. Jared Rushe 8. Daithi McGowan 9. Rian McConnell 10. Cathal lacey 11. Jamie Browne 12. Mark coffey 13. Hughie Corcoran 14. Christian Finley 15. Conor Harford Thought Rian McConnell was meaths best player, Cathal Lacey, Conor Quigley and Dylan Garrigan also played pretty well. Good experience for these lads. I don't agree that it was a waste of time. Sheridan2010louth (Meath) - Posts: 194 - 12/01/2025 14:39:18 2585629 Link 0 |
Fair enough I wasn't at it so I didn't know, anyone know how they got on against galway, allot of meath players involved with the college's again this year which is a good sign.

How many here do people reckon can push their way into senior squad? Daithi McGowan appears to be only one with reasonable experience. Is Murphy from St Pats involved. Surely a stronger forward than Corcoran up from U20s.

Jamie Murphy is still u20. None of the u20s were involved. I don't think any from that panel breaks into the senior squad this year. Rian McConnell and Liam Kelly should do next year.

Its was Josh Harford from Kilbride who was 15.

Would tend to agree it was a complete mismatch. Only benefit is maybe giving some of last years under 20's experience against division 1 level players to give them a clear indication of the step up that's needed. But it was an enormous mismatch. That Kerry team vs our first team would have been a good game and we might have learned something. Heard our seniors lost to Galway by 1 but not sure if that's true and didn't hear any more. Less than 2 weeks our to the league now so think we are all going to Cork a bit in the dark regarding the team, style of play and the new rules LeitrimRoyal99 (Meath) - Posts: 1533 - 13/01/2025 13:13:12 2585717 Link 0 |
The only mess I can see is some of the delusional posts being let through here. Who cares about what kerry think or that their weekend was messed up. We need to stop getting down on bended knee to all these counties anyway. I'm sure the lads that played for Meath were more then happy to play. It's unbelievable that some lads are ready to pounce on management already. Really are some idiots on here southmeathgael (Meath) - Posts: 942 - 13/01/2025 19:06:18 2585756 Link 2 |
You obviously don't coach, I don't see anyone here bowing to Kerry only mealy pointing out that Meath in general couldn't organise a meaningful challenge game for this group of players. We still have the same old issue lack of professionalism, regardless of the opposition we didn't even have any analysis or trackers, If they are a development squad then invest in them, make them feel wanted but a lot of the lads coming off that field were totally dejected, grabbed the gear bag and out the gate. Pitch wasn't even marked properly, no showers, do you want me to go on. This is all within our control and yet sub par standards, We are doing the same thing over and over again and for some reason we think the outcome will be different. My opinion is that we have taken a step backwards over the last 2 months, why? Instead of investing in these young players we have brough back a number of the older guys that are past intercounty , We are looking for a quick fix, Menton, O'Sullivan and Harnan have taken some of the younger lads places. Kerry gave us a hiding last year in the Championship so I don't think having the first team tog out would have made any difference, Two Meath teams got their axxe handed to them the weekend. There are only so many knocks these lads can take. But if I look at the line i wouldn't have much confidence in any of the coaches that were there, they failed these young lads and it should not have been allowed happen.

With all due respect I don't think picking your best players to play for the county senior team is taking a step back. What does "investing in these young players" mean? If it means picking them over players that they aren't as good as then I don't see the value in that. Having players with experience is valuable in a squad, especially when they're still good enough to be playing. If the younger lads are going to make it they have to become good enough to dislodge those players on merit. The challenge match against Kerry and having the development panel be lambs to the slaughter is a different issue to picking lads based on ability and not on age

While I agree with some of what you said. The first team lost to Galway by a point, they were not 'hammered'.

Yes but the facts don't fit his negative narrative. We haven't even played 1 league game and some are already writing this management off. The mind absolutely boggles.

And Galway had close to their best team out from what I heard.

even i wouldn't write them off yet! Intercounty challenge matches are funny this time of year. You could have one Meath team playing a challenge in Kerry and another team playing Galway the same day. Or 2 Meath teams playing 2 Galway teams. And it could be any sort of mix with some senior players thrown in with kids and vice versa. I wouldnt be hung up on who is doing what when it comes to challenge matches. I do think it is a bit like the new rules where counties need to get the prep right when it comes to the challenges/training ratio as it will be new to them all. You can be guaranteed it you see a very inexperienced meath team playing a challenge somewhere, the main lads are being slogged in a training session at the same time! The OB cup was handier where it was straight into competitive matches with the main players and fringe players getting game time so you might see a mix in the league where some teams may have under trained and some may have peaked too early! All change but I will raise my early concern that we are shipping huge scores already. Yes Yes Yes too early I know .. especially with the new rules etc.. And Im still confident that there will be proper systems in place this year with more focus on defense! Will be an interesting year ahead! I had heard they lost by 4 or 5 ?

It's mad that the result of a challenge match two weeks out from the start of the league - let alone information like starting lineup - will likely forever be a mystery. Brings GAA's antiquated approach to publicity to a whole new level that all these challenge matches are such closely guarded secrets. I'm convinced some inter-county managers would play the league and most of the championship behind closed doors if they could. Fergal Lynch asked Kerry management for their lineup the other day and got a 'no comment'! MeathAbroad (Meath) - Posts: 112 - 16/01/2025 10:51:31 2586056 Link 0 |
No comment LOL... Some of these lads would want to get over themselves and are so full of their own importance with all this secrecy carry on.

We were doing it ourselves not too long ago by naming dummy teams for every game

And ? Any county that does it should cop on to themselves. Meath included .
