far too much negativity re this competition, i was there last Wednesday for the 2 matches, the double header is a great format, quality of football was good, top end of intermediate grade imo. too many on this forum picking holes in this comp re buy in and players etc, its a good outlet for players from smaller clubs and is worth supporting. its an innovative idea with plenty of good people involved at management and playing level and it deserves support fred2 (Meath) - Posts: 25 - 04/11/2023 22:43:58 2511526 Link 2 |
By defensive football I mean long periods of 13 and 14 men behind the ball. Both in our defensive and what we will face in attack. And absolutely not the Stone Age style we tried to play in the league

Not true, divisional teams also play in Cork Senior football and hurling championships every year. In the past the Junior Football Board entered a team in the Dublin SFC. And North Meath actually won the Meath SFC in the early 50s. Yes the individual senior clubs are now complaining because relegation has visited Tralee, nobody gave twoo hoots when rural clubs were relegated. For years now the low number of stand alone senior clubs in Kerry has completely skewed the Intermediate and Junior Club Championships but it took ages before the penny dropped in other counties. When we had 18 team SF and 20 team IF Championships our Intermediate and Junior champions were at a serious disadvantage when they came up against such teams that were rated 8th and possibly 20th in the Kerry pecking order. Got to watch one game. Terrible stuff not helped by conditions. If this is to survive I don't know what way is best going forward. Firstly Colm needs to stay out of how teams play in it and he should have zero input into it. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 05/11/2023 10:02:40 2511538 Link 1 |
Stone Age football is where you get 14 players behind the ball with nobody playing football, a situation where there is no difference between a good player and a useless one. With 14 behind the ball everyone gets good stats in that they are passing the ball around (mostly backwards) but going nowhere. Maybe we should promote this handball and start a new game where kicking out numbers hand passing!

Have any players stood out in the regional games yet who are worth a look on the county panel? 2020Vision (Meath) - Posts: 29 - 06/11/2023 09:48:51 2511680 Link 0 |

Still think it would be a good idea to incorporate a couple of regional teams into the Senior championship. hyperache (Meath) - Posts: 254 - 06/11/2023 15:19:32 2511778 Link 2 |
The weather this year has been terrible but there is not a lot we can do about the regionals scheduling. It'd be like saying the provincial club championships or our U19 and U15 championships shouldn't be played or finished off at this time of year. Some Novembers are bone dry, some are wash outs. So a fella who played in goals for Cavan nearly ten years ago is all that is being found out of this tournament so far? Great stuff.

I'm not saying I like this style of football because I don't at all. But it's the reality of what football is. The teams we will play in the division 2 league next year will play this way. Dublin and Kerry play this way defensively while maybe keeping 2 men up. Derry and Monaghan made the semi finals last year playing exactly this way, my point is that the county manager telling the regional team managers to make sure they don't play defensively is nonsense. Firstly because it showed up the regional to just be trial games and a not a competition worth winning on its own. And secondly because it doesn't prepare these players for the type of game they'll face if any of them made the Meath team

meath manager is entitled to give them his opinion on how they should play and regional managers are entitled to ignore him. truegael49 (Meath) - Posts: 14 - 07/11/2023 11:53:38 2511893 Link 1 |

The promotion of the competition is so bad. There's been nothing posted on the Meath GAA social media pages about this week's games. It 1:30 on Tuesday with 2 games tonight. Latest posts are score updates from the Summerhill and Naas game. Some people won't know the games are even on. Last week the only acknowledgement from Meath GAA that the games were going ahead on Wednesday came 15 minutes before throw in when the posted the teams. Even then the teams wore different numbers that advertised. If it wasn't for We Are Meath podcast, and the Meath Chronicle reports, there would be no coverage. royal11 (Meath) - Posts: 102 - 07/11/2023 13:35:20 2511929 Link 0 |
Compared to last year the Regionals are an non event. Crowds are down and the whole feel to the competition isnt good. I have to say some of the games are good not the players and the management are putting it in. It is just where Meath GAA are with it.
