Replying To JonnieG:  "At then end of the day, that's not how managers think! They all want to build up their reputations and winning silverware...
Realistically it is probably their only chance of silverware this year and more than likely our only chance of any success.

I see us competing for lower end of the Div2 table this year and we will probably get slaughtered in Leinster and more than likely the same in AI championship too depending on the draw.
It is sad to think that a year on and we are talking about the same things!
I always said it.... winning the TC was the worst thing to happen us because it is papering over the cracks. I would have rather seen us trying to fight tooth and nail to make the AI championship this year than be given a free entry.
I hope I am wrong but we seem to be going backwards and not even a competitive ball thrown in yet!!"
You are wrong

You honestly think that a man like COR with his stature in the game will feel he needs to build up his reputation ? Or that winning a mickey mouse pre season comp that most teams don't take seriously would enhance his reputation ?? Come off it lad.

He couldn't care less about winning or losing the OB Cup. All him and his management will care about is having the team fully primed for the first league game and hes right. That is all that matters over the next few weeks because beating Fermanagh is an absolute must .

Madness. I've been on here plenty since we won the TC saying I'm not getting carried away because we won it and also that I feel we won't know if there has been genuine improvement until a few games into this league campagin. But to say we've gone backwards without a ball being kicked is some waffle. How do you know we've gone backwards ? At least give management and team 3 league games to and then make up your mind .

For so many on here it seems to go from one extreme to the other . Totally hyping up our TC cup success talking about clear and obvious improvements despite the fact that all the teams bar Down were terrible and even Down if we are honest were average at best. Then you have people on the other extreme totally writing off the year as you said before a ball has been kicked. Bizarre stuff either way.

Well the poster I was replying to seems to speaking for every single manager out there by saying "thats not how managers think"

So why not yeah I am speaking for him. But if it makes you happy I will add in that In my opinion he couldn't care less about winning the OB cup.

Don't think TC win was over hyped, many posters happy to see us winning it, however, fully aware of the standard of opposition. Meath improved as season progressed, was what we witnessed enought to beat any of the top 10? My opinion would be no, but hopefully enough to see us finish in top 4/5 of Div 2 and be competitive in A/I series. Talk about Meath going backwards before a competitive ball has been kicked is bizarre and difficult to understand logic behind posters view. We have a few back from injury, younger lads have more experience and management have had a chance to bed in and learn from mistakes, add in qualification for A/I series and things look slightly brighter than last year.

Agree with you for the most part but IMO it remains to be seen if we actually improved or did we just come against much weaker opposition who were easier to play against. We will find out over the 6/8 weeks .

It is very worrying and Im afraid the hammering tonight is a sign of things to come for the year!! of course it was only the first challenge but you can be guaranteed that Cork wanted to continue their progress from the outset! Playing players way out of position show that COR has learned nothing from last year if he has to start trying his players in other positions!
We are in trouble this year and already leaking 3-12 in games!!"
This was the post two weeks before Christmas from this poster.

We can't make any judgment on progress or not until after match 4. Give everyone a chance. The weakened sideline worry's me. I do think pound for pound to use a boxing term Colm has "potentially " the best group of players we have had since 07/ 2010. So we will have to see how he manages that.

So you believe that because we have as you call it a free entry into the championship players won't fight to finish as high in the league as possible.
I find that an unbelievable statement and to say winning the TC was the worst thing another unbelievable stupid statement.
You have a bunch of mostly young players who go and win a tournament that was aimed at improving teams of the standard of the likes of Meath and you believe winning it is a bad thing .
I take it you weren't in CP last August when Donal Keoghan after years of giving his all for Meath was presented with the Cup .
After one OByrne cup game you have Meath getting slaughtered in leinster and the AI series rolling over and not fighting in the league and the management trying to win the OB Cup to boost their own ego's and reputations .
Amazing post to say the least I'd hate to have you fighting in the trenches you'd wave the white flag before a shot was fired .

Lots of Meath players doing well in Sigerson last night. 1-1 for Matt Costello, 1-1 for Ruairi Kinsella, 1-3 for Eoghan Frayne, Jack Flynn with a point. Conor Gray didn't play for Maynooth so hopefully his shoulder is fine. Caulfield and Walsh also started for DCU. And great to see Brian O'Halloran and John O'Regan off the under 20's getting game time. 3 more Meath guys should start for UCD today. Biggest Sigerson involvement from Meath I can remember

I'd tend to agree re. the potential of this group. A word too for the group that got us promoted to division 1 and into the Super 8s in 2019 which was strong but lacked the depth to push on. Potential has to be translated into something more tangible of course. I'd be concerned about the fullback line but hoping with the way the game is played today we can paper over those cracks with numbers dropping back to support them. Outside of that, I'm happy to see that the goalkeeping and midfield situations appear to be rectified (long-standing problems) and it seems the pick of forwards in the county are on the panel too. Let's see how it comes together over the next few months.

Yes indeed. I do think the group that got us promotion and into super 8s done magnificent. When you look that we had problem areas at gk and midfield (no disrespect to the players who occupied those areas and excelled to get us into them) I'd say our strongest line during that time is ironically our weakest at the min the full back line. People can say whatever they want McGill would be a huge asset in that position. Now from what I hear he will not play under current regime (he has been asked ) but it's a no unfortunately. We have to respect his decision on that. And move on and as you say keep players dropping back to help out.

Royal.Legend...yep not expecting much this year!! you dont have to go through my posts - I will tell you straight up!

And yep mmc...im old school if you want! i didnt jump up and down in happiness or with a tear in my eye when we were presented with a worthless trophy for teams that could not make the top grade competitions! I would actually rate the O'Byrne cup higher than the tailteann cup because at least there is more history to it!! I remember being at an O'Byrne cup game in Mullingar against Westmeath where there was 14000 people at it!
Its funny...ye are all saying that COR or anyone could not give a hoot about the O'Byrne cup but ye are all saying how great it was to be in CP for the Tailteann cup win!! Haha!!
I actually feel for Donal K that he didn't win leinster medals or a Sam but there are many greats out there that are in the same boat. A pity but true!

And yes I stand by my predictions that we will not do any better this year simply because of the lack of coaching quality brought into the management set up! That what it boils down to for me!!
And if you want to trace through my posts I have been saying that all along and i have also said that IF we had a top class experienced coach in the setup, we actually have a team that could do very well!! But there is a fine line!
The only sign of progress for me this year would be promotion to Div1 in the league!
So whats your expectation this year? Are you hoping we get relegated to Div3 so we can give the TC another good crack for 2025??

The OByrne Cup is as worthless as your predictions unless you really are a westmeath man they celebrated winning OByrne cups .
Donal didn't lift the Delaney cup because Meath haven't been good enough and the best team ever in Dublin have dominated the game since he starred playing .
Maybe ask him what cup means more the Tailtean Cup or OByrne Cup I know what he'd tell you .
I've a feeling you would rather gloat on your predictions than see Meath perform well this year .
I predict this meath team will compete at the top level in the next 2/3 years and anything they do before that is a bonus but I certainly won't be hoping COR or the players fail .

I doubt Donal will be going around gloating about being a Tailteann Cup winner to be honest! He is a bigger and better player than that! He would have been chasing Leinsters and AIs and as i said before, unfortunately not all great players get what they deserve!
And I have no interest in gloating on my predictions as I am a true Meath supporter who wants to see us back contesting for Leinsters and All Irelands. I have no interest in words like "transition" or predictions on where we might be in 2/3 years!
When there is a decent pool of players available, the results should immediate! Look what good managers have done with teams like Mickey Harte and louth or Burke with Roscommon! And I don't think for one minute that our players are worse than what those teams have!
I just don't think our players are getting the best coaching setup they deserve and that will be our downfall!
We have had over 10 years to get a blueprint in place to try and get to Dublin's level and we are no closer! And now we have a coaching staff in place that's nowhere near what it should be. And that's no disrespect to the likes of Giles! I like to see him in the setup but working along side some really experienced top class coaches.
It is simple....we have not progressed as a footballing county in terms of our coaching or system of play! we still think that we can go out and just try and score as much as we can and forget to defend!
And unfortunately this year will be no different because we don't have the coaching structure in place
