Kingscourt Stars got their Cavan senior football championship title defence off to a winning start last night be edging out Ramor United.

It finished 1-13 to 0-14 at Kingspan Breffni, where Caoimhin Magee’s goal midway through the second-half proved key for the holders.

Two-pointers in the first period from John McCullough and Meath star Jordan Morris, who recently returned from a stint in Boston, helped Colin Kelly’s men to hold a narrow 0-8 to 0-7 lead at the halfway stage.

Matthew Smith levelled for Ramor inside the opening two minutes of the restart prior to points from Cormac McAvinney and Cian Shekleton (free) sailing over at the other end.

Morris pushed Kingscourt three ahead and they’d hit the jackpot on 45 minutes when their ace attacker slipped Magee through one-on-one and he rolled the ball low past Liam Brady.

The Virginia side responded with points via Sean McEvoy (3), Oliver McCrystal and Conor Bradley, but couldn’t close the gap as Kingscourt held out for an early two points in the Oliver Plunkett Cup race.

The action in the Breffni County resumes this evening when Cavan Gaels and Mullahoran meet at Kingspan Breffni (8pm) ahead for four more games on the schedule over the coming days.
