Galway footballers won't grace Tuam Stadium again this year

Many Galway football fans are lamenting the prospect of not seeing the county’s senior footballers in action at Tuam Stadium again this year.

After playing back-to-back games in the Connacht FBD League there – including last Sunday’s final win over Mayo – Padraic Joyce’s men aren't expected to run out again at the spiritual home of Galway football until 2027 at the earliest. This is because all of Galway’s ‘home’ games in the Allianz Football League are scheduled for Pearse Stadium, while they are also likely to play any ‘home’ matches they get in the Championship in Salthill.

The absence of big matches in Tuam this year will be a source of disappointment to those responsible for redeveloping the venue in recent years. A new stand to replace the old ‘hayshed’ was constructed in 2023/24 with the help of a €350,000 donation from the late Joe and Helen O’Toole of O’Toole’s Tuam, while other improvements have also taken place to bring it up to modern standards.
