The umpires were the centre of attention in yesterday's Br Bosco Cup (Leinster Colleges Senior 'A' Football Championship) quarter-final between Marist College, Athlone and Terenure College.

In what was a Christmas cracker in Terenure, the Westmeath school prevailed 3-2 on penalties after the sides had finished level at 3-15 apiece after extra-time.

However, the game was overshadowed by a couple of contentious calls by the match officials, including a late point attempt for Terenure which one umpire awarded and the other waved wide. The referee eventually ruled out the score which, had it been awarded, would have sent Tenenure - who are a traditional rugby powerhouse - through to the semi-finals.
