Grangenolvin made it a Leinster club championship double for Kildare this afternoon by defeating Carlow’s Fighting Cocks in the eastern province’s junior football championship final.
It finished 1-12 to 1-8 at the SETU Carlow Campus, where the visitors dominated large portions of the first-half to lead by 11 points at the break.
The Kildare champions were 0-5 to 0-1 ahead when Conall Bergin struck their goal in the 16th minute and they’d go on to hold a commanding 1-9 to 0-1 advantage when the sides went in at the interval.
William Kelly nailed a two-pointer early in the resumption for Fighting Cocks and the home side would be back in it once Cillian Fagan fired to the net in the 35th minute.
Grangenolvin were able to steady their ship though and a point from Nathan Doyle down the home stretch would put six between them again ahead which proved too much of a gap to try and bridge for the Carlow champions in the time which remained.
The four-point win for Grangenolvin completes a provincial double for Kildare on the day, with Sallins having also defeated Tubberclair of Westmeath in the Leinster club intermediate football championship final on a 2-11 to 2-4 scoreline in Newbridge.
