GAA president Jarlath Burns has pledged to “honour” Semple Stadium for the remainder of his term.

Speaking at the unveiling of the “Ár gCluichí féin” statue at the famous Thurles ground yesterday (Thursday), the Armagh man said that work must done to upgrade the stadium which has fallen behind more modern venues in recent times.

Burns added that the last few months of his tenure as the association’s president will see him “do everything I can” to honour that stadium.

“The future of Semple Stadium lies in myself and others to ensure that in the next ten years it gets the funding to make the people who walk past this statue proud to be in this stadium and proud to see it as a part of the future of the GAA,” Burns is quoted saying by TippFm.com.

“So I make that pledge to you today, in the final few months I have as Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael I will do everything I can to honour this stadium and make it the stadium it should be and can be and was, whenever it was built by the visionaries like Tom Semple.”
