Meath's Mathew Costello

Meath attacker Matthew Costello hopes that Division 1 football next year can stand to the Royals after a disappointing end to their championship campaign this summer.

Robbie Brennan’s men bowed out of the Sam Maguire Cup race on Saturday after a 0-22 to 2-13 defeat in Castlebar where they had led the hosts by 10 points at one stage in the first-half.

Speaking to GAA.ie, Costello said it was “tough to put the finger on” where it went wrong for Meath against the Westerners, but says there is plenty of potential for further improvement with the current crop of players next season.

“Looking at the likes of Roscommon this year in Division 1, I think it worked out very well for them,” said the Dunshaughlin man. “Playing very well and playing against the top teams for the early part of the year.

“Hopefully it's going to stand to you, but like that it's going to be very difficult to stay up there.

“You're playing unbelievable teams week in, week out. They're so used to being in All-Ireland semi-finals and the likes and provincial finals and they're used to the big days.

“If we can come out the right side of more games than not, it hopefully should stand well to us.”
