A young Burren footballer was airlifted to hospital after being injured during the Down U16FC final last Saturday in Mayobridge.
The final between Burren and Castlewellan was abandoned in the second half after Shea Trainor suffered an injury, from which he is expected to make a full recovery. Burren GAA has thanked the Air Ambulance Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service who assisted, and have wished the player a speedy recovery.
"We would like to sincerely thank everyone, including the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service & the Air Ambulance Northern Ireland, who helped on Saturday at the U16 Boys County Championship Final," the club said.
"We are extremely grateful for the the quick responses of the doctors and medics who were at the game and who were able to provide help & support and to Mayobridge GAC and Castlewellan GAA for all their help.
"We wish our player Shea a full recovery & our thoughts and prayers with his family."
In also wishing Shea a speedy recovery, Castlewellan GAA posted on Facebook: "We all looked forward to last Saturday afternoon’s Boys Under 16 championship final with Burren in Mayobridge. We are all too aware of the traumatic event which unfolded.
"We wish echo the sentiments of our fellow Gaels Burren and acknowledge the assistance provided by our own members, those of Burren GAA, host club Mayobridge GAC, the emergency services and all the other individuals who helped Shea. You were all truly magnificent.
"Castlewellan wish him a speedy recovery and our thoughts are with Shea and his family at this time. We hope we will see him again soon in his club colours."
St Mark's High School, Warrenpoint and Warrenpoint FC have also wished the young player well in his recovery.
"Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family and friends of former Academy player Shea Trainor following the incident during Saturday’s Championship Final," Warrenpoint FC said.
"We’re relieved to hear that Shea is on the mend and wish him a full and speedy recovery.
"Our gratitude goes to the doctors, medics, NI Ambulance Service, Air Ambulance Northern Ireland, and everyone involved for their incredible work and swift response."
