Tony McEntee could be set for a quick return to inter-county management with Mayo.

The 2002 All-Ireland SFC winner with Armagh, who recently ended a five-year tenure in Sligo, is the early favourite to replace Kevin McStay in the Mayo hotseat, according to a report in The Connaught Telegraph. McStay was ‘relieved of his duties’ last week and the process for appointing his successor is expected to be outlined at a county board meeting next Monday night, July 7.

The meeting was due to take place last night, but has been deferred amid growing speculation over who the next manager might be.

McEntee is no stranger to Mayo, having served as a selector during Stephen Rochford’s reign. As well as raising Sligo’s stock, he managed his native Crossmaglen Rangers to back-to-back All-Ireland Club SFC titles in 2011 and ’12.

Meanwhile, Sligo have also set next Monday as the closing date for applications for their vacant manager’s post, which is viewed as an attractive proposition in light of recent underage successes. They hope to have a new management in place before the start of the local club championships on Friday, August 1.
