Wicklow CCC are expected to launch an investigation into the ugly off-field scenes that marred last Saturday’s county SFC quarter-final between Rathnew and Carnew Emmets in Aughrim.
Footage of fighting on the terrace near the end of the game at Echelon Park has been widely viewed online. The brawl, which involved at least one Rathnew player and several spectators, broke out just behind the Carnew dugout and happened on the same weekend as another disgraceful incident was witnessed at a club football game in Cavan.
Former Wexford sharpshooter Ben Brosnan scored 10 points as 2024 intermediate champions Carnew won by 2-14 to 1-8 to reach the last-four along with Arklow Geraldines Ballymoney, Baltinglass and Tinahely.
Baltinglass needed extra-time and penalties to see off Kiltegan in their quarter-final, with county goalkeeper Mark Jackson scoring four points, saving a penalty in the shootout and then kicking the winning penalty.
