The New York hurlers enter the Lory Meagher Cup for the first time this weekend.
The Exiles are due to land in Dublin Airport on Thursday morning ahead of their semi-final against Monaghan at TEG Cusack Park on Saturday. Despite having had no competitive games, New York are favourites to win the fourth-tier hurling championship after being crowned Connacht Hurling League champions last year.
The winners of the last-four clash will face Cavan in the final at Croke Park on the weekend after next. While New York’s participation has been widely welcomed, many have questioned the decision to give them a bye into the semi-finals when four teams have already been knocked out.
The same goes for the Tailteann Cup which their footballers don’t enter until the preliminary quarter-final stage for travel and logistical reasons.
