Farragher's heroics can't save Castlegar as Galway SHC quarter-final pairings decided

The Galway SHC quarter-final line-up is known following an exciting weekend of preliminary quarter-final action.

Holders Loughrea face Athenry, Sarsfields meet Craughwell, Clarinbridge take on Gort and Tommy Larkins lock horns with Turloughmore in the last-eight. 

Loughrea remain on course for a three-in-a-row of Tom Callanan Cups after overcoming Castlegar by 2-21 to 2-17 at Kenny Park. This was despite the best efforts of former All-Star Ger Farragher who scored 1-7 for the losers at the age of 43.

Substitute Jamie Ryan shot five points for the defending champions, with Tiernan Killeen and Martin McManus raising their green flags.

Gort knocked out local rivals and former All-Ireland kingpins St Thomas' thanks to a narrow 0-22 to 2-15 victory on Saturday. Conor Cooney bagged an early goal for St Thomas', while Eanna Burke also netted, but big performances from Aidan Helebert, Greg Lally and Nathan Gill gave Gort the edge.

In the other preliminary quarter-finals, Turloughmore were comfortable 0-22 to 2-9 winners over Liam Mellows, while Dara Zimmer's late goal handed Craughwell a dramatic 1-23 to 0-25 extra-time win over Ardrahan.
