I was impressed with how we held ball for last three minutes in injury time and ran clock down. And an Ulster final is much bigger than staying in division 1. It's all about championship. doratheexplorer (Cavan) - Posts:829 - 21/03/2017 16:00:26 You have got to be joking. League starts and ends first this is why no one should even be thinking of Ulster. Please don't mention the McKenna cup. Once Cavan have secured their position in division one we can then start to entertain Ulster but no point in getting to an Ulster final if you leave it behind you so by getting good competitive football right now will stand to all the players and the county going forward. Indeed. We will start the Ulster Championship with a lot more purpose and confidence if we maintain Div 1 status. The confidence and achievement of that will propel us into the Championship with all the belief we need. The last two league matches are of the upmost importance. Championship more important than league. Simples. Not even debatable.

Can it be that we haven't beaten Kerry in a National League or Championship game since our last win 70 years ago in the Polo Grounds. I have some recollection of a Cavan win in the 1970's in Breffni Park against Kerry but it may have been a challenge match or the opening of a new pitch. A good few of the winning All Ireland Junior Team would have tasted success against Kerry a couple of years ago played last week end. Anybody know Jimmy Magee's telephone number!!! it is debatable. how on earth can anyone deem a knockout competion to be more important or relevant than a league. especially a competiition like ths sll ireland football championship with its ridiculous provinicial and qualifier competitions. It's a farce. The league is a proper competition

What are you looking for Dora? A team of one yr wonders. Team is progressing very well, defending and tackling excellent. Mayo were left with taking pot shots from wings and distance, Excellent breaking out at speed and attacking down the centre, not taking the ball into the tackle or being pushed out wide, Shot selection was poor early in the game but they're learning. An anglocelt cup while possible would be a tough ask of this team right now but another year in division one would work wonders and set us up for a crack at that ulster and maybe more for an extended period. Going back to div.2 could set us back a couple of yrs. we need to be playing the dublins, mayo's done gals, tyrone's and Kerry's every year. Well there wasn't much emphasis put on the championship this past few years.

So your on about another year in Division 1 helping us have a crack at Ulster Champ. So therefore you acknowledge that the Championship is a more important competition?

The league is a better competition but the championship is much more prestigious. If you ask people to name of the championship winners by year or league which one do you think people will know more of?

I'd rather win the Ulster championship than the league. And I'd rather get to an Ulster final than a league final. Awwwwnow (Cavan) - Posts: 1050 - 22/03/2017 10:25:20 1969865 Link 0 |
For us an Ulster Championship would be the ultimate prize at the moment, there is no debate, and crowd attendances at matches would easily reflect this. Championship holds the most prestige and is the main event but for half the teams in the country it's a non event. Hardtimes (Cavan) - Posts: 1056 - 22/03/2017 11:21:13 1969889 Link 0 |
I'd agree with people that Ulster Championship is more prestigious, but the league is certainly catching up. League finals in Croke Park last year were a wonderful occasion, and it seemed as if Kerry v Dublin was a big game. Albeit there was festivities going on afterwards but it was a good day in croke park despite cavan being beaten. gowna02 (Cavan) - Posts: 99 - 22/03/2017 11:47:00 1969900 Link 0 |

Off course if you put it in perspective The league is the first to be played before Ulster ect so developing the team for going forward and whats more important than using the league and doing well in it for I can tell you now doing bad in the league the heads and hearts also motivation drop. The lad's and the management work long hard hours to try and succeed. The Quiet Man (Cavan) - Posts: 4601 - 22/03/2017 12:30:17 1969915 Link 0 |
Anyone know the ref for Sunday? I imagine Kerry will be physical and our lads will be pumped up. Hardtimes (Cavan) - Posts: 1056 - 22/03/2017 12:36:26 1969918 Link 0 |
Someone pointed out on this forum this week that Mayo have been division 1 for the past 23 years in a row. No other team has been there as long. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5193 - 22/03/2017 12:53:53 1969927 Link 0 |

It is irrelevant the importance of league or championship. You need to play the top teams in the league to prepare for the championship. Most of the time the top teams in div 1 end up winning their province. One plays into the other McGiolla (Cavan) - Posts: 42 - 22/03/2017 13:41:56 1969965 Link 1 |

Mayo were in div 3 in 1995/1996 and then promoted to div 2 for the 1996/1997 so its not quite 23 years ... They are still up there for a long time though ... sidelineview (Cavan) - Posts: 109 - 22/03/2017 15:42:17 1970020 Link 0 |
