Have to give credit where credit is due. Last year we won three games to qualify for the Ulster final including a preliminary round and then we beat a well fancied Donegal team in the final. This is after playing 6 games in a row including two National league games. That's a hell of an achievement. Consistency has always been Cavan's problem. Need a strong panel to be together for a few years. It would be great to see McVeety and Monagh back ,it would add a bit of back bone to team. Looking at the likes of Dublin,Kerry,Donegal and Tyrone were a good bit off. Still we're reigning Ulster champions, can't take that away from us no matter what happens. In the history books and it gave us great entertainment in the worst of times. Virginia (Cavan) - Posts: 101 - 30/05/2021 09:40:34 2346443 Link 0 |
Galligan is better around the middle not at full forward. In defence of the full forward line yesterday some of the ball into them was terrible tom84 (Cavan) - Posts: 334 - 30/05/2021 10:14:04 2346448 Link 0 |
The Derry full forward was man marked by an All-Star yesterday but still managed to kick 8 pts.... If McKiernan can't take been man marked he should pack it in...been man marked should inspire him not excuse him... He is one of our main score getters yet late in the game showed no interest in getting in and around the square when a goal was needed... like last week when he scored his goal it looked like he thought he had enough done... If only he had the willingness of Martin Reilly who dragged us back into the game .... On another point what in Gods name was Galligan wasting time coming up to take the last free with time almost up and us needing a goal.... It made the referee's mind up to blow up nearly as soon as he kicked it .... and by the way the referee gave us anything that was going too so no complaints about him....

No matter how many all stars you have you cant stop a man scoring from frees. A full back's job is primarily to protect the goal area but with as many as four men coming through the middle at speed you can only do so much. Ciaran Brady and Smith can't come back soon enough. Kiernan is a classy scoring forward and the sooner he is back there the better. Just consider the scoring averages over the three games; Derry plus 37pts. Cavan plus 3. Longford minus 22, Fermanagh minus 18. Put your mind back to the Cavan Fermanagh game, every time a Cavan back sneezed a Fermanagh man fell to the ground rolling in agony and the ref oblidged - say no more!!! Is that Tailteann Cup for Cavan in 2022? patman92 (Cavan) - Posts: 71 - 30/05/2021 13:49:59 2346493 Link 1 |
But our All Star let him have 4 from play which would go down as poor enough defending I think... the point been he was making things happen while our forwards ( Martin Reilly excluded) did very little... As in a lot of games we give away far too many scoreable frees and it can't be all down to bad refereeing.... We seem very poor at tackling and nearly always use both hand instead of the near hand when putting a challenge in. When a ref sees both hands used in a tackle it gives him an easy opportunity to blow for a free and then make the 2 arm gesture to explain why... Boils down to poor coaching and management... if a player is tackling like this at club level which they must be is he really suited to county football where there is much more scrutiny by referees...?

The number of hands is irrelevant - all a forward has to do when a back approaches is look for a soft patch of ground, dive into and roll around in agony. l watched the Cork/Clare game today and one or two of the Clare lads were very good at it. A good percentage of the Clare scores came from handy enough frees. Declankillann. declankillann (Dublin) - Posts: 83 - 30/05/2021 17:05:23 2346580 Link 0 |
Not if we get promoted to Division 2 after the 2022 league.

That's more a case of bad refereeing than anything else.... but proper tackling is just as important as score taking and sadly we are a long way short on both disciplines at the moment... we seem to run with players until they get within scoring distance and then put a tackle in that usually ends up in a free... The good teams put tackles in way out the field where giving a free away is not as damaging.. When did you ever see McKiernan or other forwards put tackles in to stop attacks building from the back... they just retreat and more often foul within scoring distance.... brainless stuff

Nothing like a defeat to get the most negative empty vessels in Cavan on their laptops telling us how crap our own team is. fredflint (Cavan) - Posts: 1485 - 30/05/2021 19:40:11 2346660 Link 1 |
Division 3/4 is usually where the crap teams operate right enough.....!

Crap teams don't win ulster titles. Crap supporters take pleasure in ridiculing their own team at the first opportunity. Thats you lad.

Harsh on the lads. Don't belittle their achievements last year. Come on. It was a level playing field for all. We won it on merit. I do agree our league form is pretty awful and simply must improve. Cavan_Shambles (Cavan) - Posts: 575 - 31/05/2021 10:59:15 2346840 Link 0 |

Cannot believe some are denigrating our Ulster win last year. It was really one of the hardest won ever, due to coming from the prelims, out 4 weeks in a row in Championship (6 if you count league before it). You're basing our year so far against 3 games in a silly league format. Even the build up is different. 4 weeks of a build up, and then into a silly format where our 2 closest teams had a huge head start is quite ridiculous and quite on point for the GAA to let this happen. Fredflint..... I am just calling it as it is and in no way ridiculing the team but if you think playing Division 3 football can prepare you for playing in the most competitive of all the provincial Championships you are deluded...maybe it's all part of Mickey Graham's great plan and I hope it is but I just can't see it...I don't think any right minded person would disagree with my assessment of Saturdays game.... It might not be what me or you want to hear or admit but that is the way it is.... I would gladly play division 3/4 football every year if we were successful and competitive in Ulster but that would never happen...
