Donegal U20 football manager Gary Boyle has confirmed that Finnbarr Roarty was ‘rested’ for Wednesday night’s dramatic Ulster Championship win over Fermanagh.
Eyebrows were raised in Buncrana when the Young Footballer of the Year and U20 captain didn’t tog out as the hosts narrowly avoided a surprise defeat. However, Boyle stressed that he was available if needed.
“We decided after the (senior) game in Roscommon on Sunday that he had a big 70 minutes and with the conditions and that – looking ahead to the schedule over the next couple of weeks, we just decided we would go with the lads we had tonight,” the U20 boss told reporters.
“We gave Finnbarr a rest tonight because we’re going to need him going forward.”
While Roarty is set to feature in Sunday’s Allianz Football League Division 1 final round encounter with Monaghan, fellow senior Conor McCahill is in danger of missing out after hobbling off just three minutes into the U20 opener.
“He had a bit of a dead leg, but hopefully he will be okay,” Boyle added.
