Louth made a winning start to their Leinster minor football championship campaign yesterday evening by edging out Meath on a 0-14 to 2-7 scoreline in Skyrne.

The scores of Connell Kelly, Cillian Duff and Brian O’Neill helped Louth to lead by 0-7 to 0-5 at half-time but a Cormac Walsh goal surged the home side in front two minutes into the second-half.

Louth hit the next three points unanswered ahead of another Walsh goal tying up things in the 48th minute, after which a couple of scores from Pauric Maguire, including a superb two-pointer, proved crucial in getting the Wee County over the line.

In Newtownforbes, Westmeath were impressive in their 3-15 to 0-12 win over neighbours Longford.

Having led by 0-10 to 0-7 at the halfway stage, goals from Darragh Murray, Finn Brennan and Dean Kelly saw the visitors over the line towards a comfortable opening win in the Fr Larry Murray Cup race.

Meanwhile, the Leinster U20 football championship resumes this evening with Westmeath hosting defending champions Louth at Lake Point Park (throw-in 7.45pm).
