The Westmeath senior footballers were forced to train in Leitrim last week due to the unavailability of playable pitches in their own county.
The recent incessant rainfall took its toll on pitches across the Lake County, so much so that Mark McHugh’s men had to train at a club ground in Leitrim. Westmeath remains without a Centre of Excellence, while it would appear that the 4G pitch in St Loman’s was overlooked on this occasion.
Training outside the county is nothing new for Westmeath whose senior hurlers have regularly used the GAA National Games Development Centre in Abbotstown in recent years. Ironically, the Leitrim footballers previously used Mullingar as a training base given its central location between the county and Dublin where a lot of their players have been traditionally based.
Westmeath were back training on home soil (St Paul's, Clonmellon) last night ahead of Saturday evening's Allianz Football League Division 3 clash with Laois. A win in Portlaoise would leave them on the cusp of making an instant return to Division 2.
