Mayo chalked up their second win in the Connacht U20 football championship by seeing off Roscommon on a 2-16 to 1-15 scoreline in Castlebar on Thursday.

A goal in each half from Oisin Deane proved crucial for the hosts, as did the contribution of county senior stars Darragh Beirne and Kobe McDonald.

Deane netted his first goal in the ninth minute and points from Joey Holmes and Beirne would edge Mayo towards a 1-6 to 0-8 lead before John McGuinness levelled things up just before half-time.

McDonald’s ‘45’ put the home side back in front early in the restart and they’d pull a goal clear before Deane found the onion bag again in the 43rd minute.

Two Dean Casey frees were and a Charlie O’Carroll point were the Roscommon response before Casey raised the green flag in the 56th minute and McDonald wrapped up his team’s tally with a two-point free two minutes later.

Meanwhile, Sligo go their first win of the campaign by edging past Leitrim on a 1-11 to 0-12 scoreline in Tubbercurry.

After the sides played out an airtight first-half which finished 0-5 apiece, Leitrim moved ahead with scores from Ruairi O’Rourke and Paul Honeyman before the Yeats lads eventually levelled it again late on and Adam Feeney’s goal at the death would prove the difference between the sides.
