Westmeath claimed the All-Ireland U20 ‘B’ football championship title with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Monaghan at Kingspan Breffni last night.
After it finished 1-15 apiece at the end of extra time, Ryan Kelly, Shane Corcoran and Ronan Murray converted the spot kicks for the Lake County as they triumphed 3-1 on penalties to the title.
Packie Doogan Burke netted an opening minute goal for Monaghan in the decider, and while it’d be cancelled out by Finn Duffy’s green flag that put Westmeath in front in the 22nd minute, it was the Ulster side that edged a 1-7 to 1-6 lead at half-time.
The sides would be level four times in the second-half, with man-of-the-match Corcoran’s late point forcing extra time for Westmeath as it finished 1-13 apiece at the end of normal time.
It was Monaghan that went on to force the penalty shootout where their Leinster counterparts held their nerve to triumph to the title.
