Hurlin Keeper 2020 & Beyond

(Oldest Posts First)

I know its early to be talking about this but the next few weeks/months in the club champo is the best opportunity for someone to step out and mark themselves for this one. Callanan has been the best goalie we have ever had but his time is surely up at this stage. I cannot think of anyone tbh who is a ready made replacement. If Canning has any more bad injury maybe he should be stuck in as I am sure there would be nobody better. Any other outfield players we could stick in and do a job??

Certainly an big issue. would we get another year from Callanan, great if we could.

Murphy from the u21's last year looked a very good prospect and the u20 keeper this year likewise.

Don't think Fergal Flannery is the answer anyway

With a new manager in place and the county cup over we are no closer to solving this conundrum here. I cant even hazard a guess. If I was SON id be strongly looking at some outfield players for goalkeeper like some other county teams do successfully. someone with an eye for creativity and whos not afraid to give orders. if Tadgh Haran doesn't fit in the forward unit someone like him may not be a bad option.

Who are the best goalkeepers out there at the moment on the Club scene.

The position has evolved quite a bit with the puckouts being a big issue currently.

Hes 31.
Colm Callanan has been the best keeper I've seen in a Galway gansey and I'm around a long time.
In my opinion young Murphy from Larkins is the man for the job now.

Suggesting an outfielder going in goals is ridiculous. Probably looking at someone like Eoin Murphy who plays outfield for his club but he has always been able to play both. You can't retrain someone like Canning or Haran now. Just because distribution has become a huge part of the game doesn't mean we can disregard actual goalkeeping.

Skehill is the starter for now and the likes of Murphy and Fahy will surely be given their chance to impress. SON has a panel with another All Ireland in them but there are a few kinks to be ironed out and keeper is close to top of the list. Got to an All Ireland with Skehill as recently as 2018 though and we did not play all that well that year, so it's not mad to suggest we could win won with him. He's not as good as Callanan and has a mistake in him, but he has his merits too.

a mistake in him.... I don't like criticizing individuals but come on... hes made more mistakes than our county board!! I wouldn't be surprised not to see his name on the 2020 panel.

look i dont think it is correct to lambaste a player. but we cannot go back to said goalie. Once we hit croke park mid July the errors are guaranteed, perhaps own self confidence. fine during the soft ground season but big days bring out the worst.

Shur Callanan was at fault for both goals in the 2017 final! We don't produce top class goalies in Galway for some reason.

Murphy and the young lad from the u20s last year should be given a chance to prove themselves. But if they cant establish themselves then skehill is our best bet. Flannery got a shot last year and he did not take it. Any other keepsrs play well in the club championship. Who ever SON picks he will know best and we all should get behind that decision be it murphy skehill Flannery or someone else.

Every player does his best, he does have his merits, massive puck out, commands the area fairly well, had a poor year in 2018 but we were pretty poor all around defensively re goals in 2018.

Hope the new mgt team can fix that.

Clearly at fault for the 2nd, not sure why he gets blamed for the 1st, I thought it was a good finish.

Most keepers will make mistakes.
