Minors 2019

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

So the minors get their first run out in the championship tonight at home to Wicklow.

Colin Ward's first year in charge after being involved with underage teams in the past along with the junior last year so there should be a nice level of continuity there for these players.

Also in our group are Louth and Kilkenny (away to both on the 8th and 14th of May). Top 2 from each group are through to the quarter finals (how that works with 3 groups of 4 I don't know) but you'd have to fancy us to come out of our group at least. Meath and Dublin are both in the same group and in theory if we were to top our group we should be avoiding the winner of that group until the semi-final at the earliest.

Team for tonight is as follows;

1 Cian Burke, Clane
2 Ryan Comeou, Baylna
3 Oisín O'Rourke, Athy
4 Tommy Gill, Carbury
5 Mark Maguire, Naas
6 Conan Boran, Eadestown
7 Jack Quinn, Leixlip
8 Kevin Eustace, St. Lawrence's
9 Shane Flynn, Baylna
10 Adam Conneely, Two Mile House
11 Johnny Owens, Celbridge
12 Ciarán O'Brien, Kilcullen
13 Eoin Meehan, Moorefield
14 Eoin Bagnal, Alymer Gaels
15 Aaron Browne, Celbridge

Best of luck to all involved.

Where did Wicklow get that number 14 from? Haven't seen a minor put in a performance like that since Donie Kingston.

Good win in the end though, really pushed on late in the 2nd half after Wicklow came back to level it a few times.

Anyways, good performances by Bagnal and Meehan in the forwards throughout. Conneely was very impressive in the 2nd half and was a good outlet for direct balls out of defence. Some of the free taking tonight was great to watch and the goal was worked very smartly near the end.

Looked a little nervous early on and Wicklow seemed to have a physical advantage around the middle and in their full forward line. Took until the final quarter for us to start dealing with the long balls in comfortably.

Wicklow pushed up on our kickouts and forced us to go long from the start which didn't hurt us too much at times. Gill was left as a sweeper throughout and was impressive in the 2nd half. Although it left Wicklow with an extra man for a short kickout every time they didn't use him as much as they could have which again helped us a bit.

Gave up 2 goal chances which would have changed things a lot, impressed with how they kept the heads when Wicklow drew level and had momentum behind them a few times in the middle of the 2nd half though.

Plenty to be pleased about anyways, ran up a decent score in the end.

Decent performance tonight. Louth settled into it a lot quicker at the start but once we got going we looked pretty good, scored 7 or 8 unanswered points during the middle of the first half and started to pull away a bit.

Louth started to go direct a lot more in the 2nd half moving their centre back and one of the mids into the forward line. Not a whole lot of movement or running off the ball from them so once we got numbers back we did ok - gave up 2 goal chances when the Louth player took his point instead of holding onto the ball to take advantage of a possible 3 v 2 against our full back line.

Up front Conneely was very impressive moving between the full and half forward line, Browne was very good too which was great to see as it was Bagnall and Meehan who were the more impressive forwards against Wicklow so promising to see others put in that level of performance tonight. Some very nice points kicked and forced the Louth keeper into 2 very good saves shortly before we got the goal.

Good chance for a lot of rotation in the Kilkenny game next Tuesday too.

Bit of a disjointed performance in the first half, Kilkenny started well in fairness to them and took a while for us to settle into it. Half our wides must have come in the first 10-15 minutes and went nearly 20 without scoring through the middle of the first half.

Oisin Milmoe looked good and scored a goal and a few points within a few minutes of each at the end of the first half to pretty much seal it, problem for him is that 4 of our most impressive players in the first 2 games played most of their football in the full forward line as well.

Burke in goal and Flynn in midfield are the only 2 players to start all 3 games so plenty of players saw game time at least over the 3 group games.

Any idea who we play next and where? Haven't managed to see them at all yet this year.

We're straight through to the semi finals.

There's still 1 game to play in group 1 so there's a few potential outcomes there depending on the result between Laois and Longford. Westmeath are already through but could finish 1st or 2nd with either of Laois and Longford joining them.

Wicklow will play Dublin in one quarter final, Meath will play the runners up in group 1, and whoever finishes top of that group will be through to the semis with ourselves. Draw for the semi isn't done yet but you'd imagine it'll be 1 of Dublin and Meath as they'll both be favourites for their quarter finals and shouldn't be drawn against each other again if they win those.

2 quarter finals due to be played the June bank holiday weekend with the semis 3 weeks later so bit of a break before we're out again - almost a case for saying a quarter final game could be a good thing.

Minors away to Laois in the semi on Friday the 21st at 8pm in Portlaoise.

Westmeath at home to the Dubs in the other semi.

Hard to gauge where ourselves and Laois are at as with a lot of underage teams really. Westmeath making the semi final after beating Meath might indicate that theirs was the stronger group, and with Laois beating Westmeath in their group game that, along with home advantage might give them the edge in this one.

Would I be right in saying there were a lot of changes for each game? Giving plenty of lads a try out. First year in a long time I couldn't get to minor matches.

Only 2 changes to the starting 15 from the Wicklow game to the Louth game.

Then for the last game against Kilkenny only 2 players who started the first 2 games started so plenty of lads got a run out at least, part of the reason why we didn't run up as big a score against Kilkenny as Wicklow especially did.

So next game should see our best 15-20. Thanks for that

Yeah should see lads who played the first 2 games start against Laois alright, be great to make another semi final and get another 2 games out of it at least.

Heading over to Portlaoise tomorrow evening , looking forward to it. Have you seen Laois play this year? Heard they're a lot better than last years team.

Well for their own sake they'd want to be a lot better than a 16 point defeat like last year :)

To be fair though we've no players left from last years team, if they have a few then that bit of extra experience along with home advantage could be a big plus for them.

Minors tomorrow, seniors on Saturday and the juniors on Sunday, nice weekend to look forward to at least.

Looking forward to this, great to see what talent is coming through.. Without sounding like I'm dissing selection or anything I'm surprised not to see more Clane lads on the panel considering they've been pretty strong the last few years, but anyway hopefully get a good run for the team and management.. On a sepreate note, is there still tickets for Saturday ?? Everything seems so quiet these days about Kildare games !!
