Hurlers 2017

When you remove 3/4 of the better players there isn't the strength in depth as shown in the earlier games
I suppose it's the same with any team

Take into account that a lot of 1b teams wouldnt fancy going up to cushendall or ballycastle, as antrim playing at home is usally a good few points advantage to them, so in retrospect it was a good westmeath win on sunday

Westmeath's hurlers came away from Cushendall with a two-point victory but despite the defeat, Antrim will take their place in Saturday's Division 2A final against Carlow. Antrim, who played the final 25 minutes with 14 men, suffered their first loss of the campaign to a Westmeath side who just about deserved their win. It was a battle of the free-takers with Westmeath's Allan Devine converting 11 of his side's points from the placed ball and Deaglan Murphy converting 0-10 for Antrim. The Saffrons came alive for the closing stages of the first half, outscoring their visitors to leave it all square at the break. Antrim added the opening two points of the second half through Murphy but a straight red card for Ciaran Johnston saw them down to 14 men.

Scorers - Antrim: D Murphy 0-12 (10f), C Clarke 1-0, N McManus (f), Conor Johnston & N McKenna 0-1 each. Westmeath: A Devine 0-12 (11f), A Clarke, N O'Brien and D McNicholas 0-2 each, P Greville (f) and J Galvin 0-1 each.
Antrim - C O'Connell 7; S Rooney 7, J Dillon 8, Ciaran Johnston 6; S McCrory 6, M Donnelly 6, P Burke 7; E Campbell 7, P Shiels 8; N McManus 7, C McCann 7, Conor Johnston 6; C Clarke 7, N McAuley 7, D Murphy 8. Subs: N McKenna 7 for E Campbell (44), P McGill 6 for Conor Johnston (63), D McKernan for S Rooney (65)

Westmeath - P Maloney 7; C Shaw 8, T Doyle 8, T Gallagher 7; A Craig 6, P Greville 7, G Greville 7; A Clarke 8, A Cox 7; A Devine 9, N Mitchell 7, N O'Brien 8; J Galvin 6, D McNicholas 8, D Egerton 6. Subs: C Boyle 7 for A Craig (15), K Doyle 7 for J Galvin (57)
Ref - J Heffernan (Wexford)

Is Cormac Boyle with the footballers or the hurlers or both. I thought I read in the paper that he came on for the footballers in Wexford but according to the hurling report above he came on in Antrim?? He's a loss to the hurlers by not being with them fulltime yet he's not making an impact with the footballers yet. Hard to do both.

Cormac is with the footballers only, Joey with the hurlers. Good result in Antrim, pity we slipped up against Carlow (we should've won that one) and hard to explain what happened against Kildare. Cormac Boyle hasn't been replaced at midfield, a lot of lads have been tried there already this year with little success. Don't see the point of having 3 goalies on the panel either, Carroll is sub goalie and McGovern was wearing 17. But at least there seems to be an improvement, Antrim beat us handy in the Walsh cup in Kinnegad.

didn't think he was on both panels, not really practical when so many league games in both codes are on the same day.

Let's hope there is a better team picked than the last day vs Meath
Underage hurling in the county is gone way back.
The work isn't been done in many clubs, there's practically no hurling in mullingar- the biggest population base.

Very poor performance the minors hurlers today

It's very disappointing to see how far the minors have gone back the last year. I guess we just had an exceptional group at this level 2/3 years ago.

Is there much coming up at u14/16 level?

3 games in a week now for club minor hurdlers
It's either a feast or a famine in the county with fixtures

Poor result for the minors but i think that is a particularly weak group. They lost to Wicklow last year in the Celtic challenge and are minus 3 or 4 key players (2 who started for the minor team last year) from that team who didn't commit this year. On top of that there's a number of players committed to the minor footballers that would start on the hurlers had they played dual. Not to defend the hammering against Meath but I'm hopeful that some of the good work being done in recent years isn't being undone straight away. U21s should be very strong this year and hopefully they can inspire some of these minors to push on.

Whatever about Kilkenny to be taking a beating from these other teams must raise questions. Unfortunatley we do not have enough depth in Westmeath GAA to allow for dual players. We should concentrate the resources on the Footballers.

What sort of shape are the hurlers in for the Laois game?

Big game today vs Kerry

Also when you see the Meath minors getting beaten by Laois you realise suddenly how far underage in the county has slipped.
No point having one good bunch of minors in 5/6 years, that everybody wanted to be involved with and had a bit of success if all the other groups coming through are ignored.

Playing a sweeper v Kerry ?
When we played limerick in the qualifiers last year and they had a man sent off the line didn't know what to do with the extra man which was jogger we left him at full back when he should have been pushed forward and then we go and play a sweeper v Kerry, Ryan and Walsh were too negative from the start apart from o Brien being sent off which is down to the player himself their was no leadership from players on the field or from the line scoring 1-03 from play against a team like Kerry is terrible. Kerry were far fitter than Westmeath both on the ball and on runs we made them look good , time for more youth in the side and on the line
