Shortly put what do any of ye know better about Walsh's character than the men around him day in day out at t raining and games? The qualities of a captain aren't only on the pitch. He could be very involved in the core of the team and is one of the more experienced players on the panel, and the one with definitely the most skill. Going into his prime years I think it's a great call by PJ to put the responsibility and trust on Walsh. Could bring out the best of him in the coming year. Don't hate on him before he even gets a chance to show himself as an example to other players."
Spot on, give him and PJ a fair chance to get themselves into their stride, they can only field what's available and play what's in front of them.

I hope Shane being made captain will work out but some people may have considered the likes of Paul Conroy or even Fiontáin O'Curraoin as wiser choices. Is Padraig Costello from Dunmore on the panel? One of the very promising young players for the future.

If Shane Walsh had 10% of the heart, bravery and work rate of Niall Skully we wouldn't be wondering where he was every time we play in Croke park. Skully keeps more effective players than Shane Walsh out of the Dublin team. Jim Gavin wouldn't take a second look at Walsh.

Its Scully not Skully, and Jim Gavin is not the Dublin manager..Walsh was one of our best players when we last won in Croker..

Shane Walsh must have given you some roasting in the past. He has stood up for Galway on plenty of occasions and this playing in a system which had him in his full /half back line for half of the game. The level of negativity of some posters here beggars belief

Shane Walsh has been truly amazing for his club over the last 2 years, particularly with his returns from play in the 2019 championship. He is the obvious candidate for the captaincy - big games suit him. I remember him destroying Monivea in the intermediate final a few years ago.

so the first game of 2020 is upon us. A lot of posters on all aspects of galway senior football for the year.
how do people think things will go on sunday?
i think its important for pj to get his first win and to not lose to mayo
seems to have gone for footballers as opposed to athletes in most positions and i am very excited to see the new keeper. Considering the team we have out is quite high quality for this time of year and with 15+ to come back it is exciting times

To my knowledge he's started 6 games there. Had a very good game against Kerry OF 2014 scoring 3 from play aged 20. A good game Vs Kildare in 2017 scoring 3 from play. A very poor game Vs Kerry 2017 QF. An ok game Vs Dublin 2018 league scoring 1 from play and 2 great frees. Sunday game Man of the match versus Kerry 2018 Super 8s. An ok game versus Dublin 2018 semi final, scoring 1-1 from play. So whatever narrative you want to spin, the facts don't back it up

@ PressureKick you should know by now that facts don't come into it when a lot of lads are posting on here...

I get that lads favour some players over others completely normal .but you could argue all day with someone with hard facts to prove your point but there are people who take such utter dislike to certain players that they dont care. They have tunnel vision and are just waiting for a poor performance.

Imagine not knowing someone personally and hating them because you dont think they're a good footballer. If you think the shouldnt be on the team that's fair enough we all have different opinions.but if you hate a player for this then you need to take a good look at yourself and sort your own issues out. And I would absolutely go as far as saying a few people genuinely hate some players after What I've seen on here and what I've heard at matches

Agus mé i mo shuí anseo i gCaisleán an Bharraigh roimh an chluiche tá rud éigin feicthe agam. Fair plé do Fhiontán Ó Curraoin, Mícheál Ó Domhnaill agus Aoifeáine Bhreathnach triúr as Gaeltacht Chonamara a bhfuil ag úsáid a n-ainmneacha trí Ghaeilge amháin ar an gclár. Is náireach go bhfuil an leagan Béarla in úsáid ag imreoirí Naomh Anna agus Cárna Caiseal. Déanaigí rud éigin faoi seo!!

Heaney and O'Curraoin both stretchered off today. Not good. O'Curraoin's in particular looked serious.

Galway looking light on midfielders already this year.

Well, that was some craic. What a comeback after being a man down from the sin-bining and nice to get back to our winning ways against the Aulde Enemy! The penalty shootout was pure drama and I'm jealous of anyone who got to be there in person.

An absolutely cracking start to 2020, tempered by the injury to Ó Curraoin, who I hope as a speedy recovery.

For those not fluent in Irish that translates as following..As I sit here in Castlebar before the game I have seen something. An account of Fenterán Ó Curraoin, Mícheál Ó Domhnaill and Aoifeéir Bhreathnach from the Connemara Gaeltacht who are using their names in Irish only on the program. It is shameful that the English version is used by St Anne and Carna Cashel players. Do something about this !!
