Salthill were extremely fortunate to get a draw off Bearna who were much the better team and had some awful wides . Salthill to be fair were missing a lot of players up front including Sean Armstrong and it was a very young lineup. Bearna will be sick.

Michaels good value for their win v An Spidéal though they almost let it slip late.

Neither game was pleasing on the eye, both very scrappy with a lot of bad wides.

Standout players on the day were 18 year old Oisin Gormley for Bearna who shot 1-2 from play and has electric pace, Evan Wynne (SK) and The election man himself Eddie Hoare. Antaine O Laoi looked dangerous but was heavily double marked throughout.

Maghnus at one point was at corner forwaed fully 110 yards from his own goal calling for the ball. A character.

The Galway county board needs to give an individual at Kenny Park a serious reality check. This evening in Athenry the attitude of the Pitch announcer needs to be addressed immediately. He was an absolute embarrassment to Kenny Park and the County board. His attitude and demonstration of self importance was embarrassing and cringe worthy. He announced to a number of players at half time that they couldn't have a football on the pitch. Now as you can imagine they ignored him but he returned in what could only be called a rant announcing to them "what language did they need to be told in to get the football of the pitch", many county boards across the country encorage kids to to bring a football or hurl to games to play at halftime (but not in Galway) but this individual didn't even want Senior club players having a warm up. I spend my time defending the GAA, club officials and ordinary volunteers to those who give out about the GAA but people like this make it easy for parents to send their kids to Rugby, Soccer or Basketball. Now Kenny Park is a fine venue but it is no Croke Park.

Took the words out of my mouth,Kenny park is a fine pitch and a nice venie but shouldn't be used by football committee with an attitude like that.Tuam crying out for decent fixtures like Annaghdowm/Claregalway and Corofin/Tuam.It was like they begrudged football being played on the hallowed sod.

No major surprises from the weekend. Tuam did quite well against Corofin from what i saw in Athenry. Caught the last 10 minutes of CG v Annaghdown. Annaghdown better pray Comer, Duggan and Frankie Burke recover and recover fast as they looked totally lost without them. I see Moycullen and Killanin played out a thriller yesterday.

The latter 3 are ravaged with injuries, particularly mtbellew where injuries are compounded by 2 suspensions. Besides that should be easy wins for corofin and milltown with the other 4 hard enough to call. Maybe barna, carraroe, st michaels and leitir mor"
Great call with Killanin, Claregalway and Monivea-Abbey.

Takeaways from the weekend:

Group 1: is even more wide open than previously thought. Barna and Killererin will be kicking themselves not to have taken full points. Spiddal's O'Laoi's are going to get a lot of attention from opposition this year. Good start from Michaels, did their job.

Group 2: Corofin did the usual job and will be hard to beat. St.James made a laugh of their league form with and excellent performance. What a statement of intent from Claregalway, Annaghdown will be shook after the result but should recover on the return of some key players.

Group 3: Mountbellew performed well against a good Monivea side despite missing some key players. Carraroe are always a tough team to play and were always going to give Caherlistrane a hard time. Moycullen put one over on the neighbours but showed poor discipline. This is a nasty group to be in.

Any other thoughts?

Funny enough. It wasnt that bad a call. 20 on all three cost 60 euro and returned 68 as a result of claregalways odds.

Is round 2 likely to be pulled now that Galway will be out in the qualifiers two weeks after?

Absolute madness - half the panel injured as it is - most clubs have players away in America

Surely majority of people want this round to be called off?

The smart lads headed off for the Summer instead of waiting around till August/Sept like last year, most don't care anyways. The refs will be getting a call to wrap a blanket around the county lads like last year. After yesterday's display there won't be too many running out to watch games.

Who is injured??? Other that Comer and now maybe FOC who could feature. I would go the complete opposite and say this round of games is badly needed for this group of players. Some need to get yesterday out of there system and some badly need game time. Not sure about the whole America thing but this round was pencilled from the beginning as long as Galway got to a Connacht final as either way win or lose they had a break. Wouldn't be sure many have parted our shores just yet (next round due in August)

Well Conroy is not back to the pace yet by the sounds of it, FOC now injured, Duggan is injured, Flynn limping for the entire second half. We're in serious trouble at midfield.

Some big results this weekend. Annaghdown are in a bit of bother. 2 defeats from 2 and they have yet to play Corofin. Martin Farragher kicked a very big score in Corofin's hammering of James'. He's doing everything he can to show he should start for Galway.
An Spidéal got an excellent win this evening against Milltown. That group is shaping up to be very tight, as is Group 3 after Monivea's win over Moycullen

Spiddal played well with a style of play very similar to Dublin. It would be a serious achievement to make the knockouts in there first year in senior ranks for such a small club. They have every chance.
