Championship Vs. Champions League

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Provisionally, Dublin are due to play the winners of Offaly and Wicklow on May 26th or 27th in the Leinster championship. The last few years has seen Dublin play on the Saturday evening in the first round. The Champions League final is on that evening and there's a reasonable chance Liverpool may be in the final. If these two clash then there's a very real possibility of supporters choosing the Champions League over the championship, given the likelihood of a facile Dublin victory. Do you think the GAA will accommodate the Champions League final by scheduling the Dubs game for an early throw in or on the Sunday? There's a precedent when a Munster rugby game (Heineken Cup semi final, if I remember correctly) clashes with a Limerick v Tipperary game and only about 1,500 fans turned up in the Gaelic Grounds, so it was only about 3% full. Will the GAA dig their heels in and schedule the match for the Saturday evening or will they learn from previous mistakes? They didn't exactly cover themselves in glory scheduling the 2016 game versus Laois for a Bank Holiday Saturday (a lot of people travel those weekends) in Kilkenny (away for both teams, not an issue for Dublin but unfair on Laois) and in the evening (clashing with the Cat Laughs festival). If they do go ahead with it in the evening will i) people not attend or ii) will people turn up for a while and then head on to watch the Champions League final (or iii) will it not affect attendance (unlikely))?

You'd hope they'd accommodate people.

Saturday night Championship games are a little annoying to be honest. For the away fans they're a hassle that a Sunday match would alleviate. When you're at home they're pretty good though so I see the pull of them, as well as for TV.

The team I support are unlikely to ever be in a Champions League Final but as a soccer fan it is still a great competition that I'd like to watch.

Yeah my use of the word 'unlikely' was perhaps a little bit of an understatement.

That's always been my plan if I win the Euromillions.

Buy Bohs and install myself as player/manager and make an assault on Europe.

Either that or buy Rovers and ruin them ;) although they do a good job at that themselves already.

could have it as a 4pm game on the Saturday if they wanted, that way It wouldn't clash with the champions league final.

Didn't they move the Dublin v Meath throw in time in 2016 to accodate Ireland v France in the euros ?

As a Liverpool fan, If we get to the champions league final (a first since 05) and it happens to clash with a Dublin game then I personally feel ive more than enough credit in the bank to dodge this absolute non-event and fly into Liverpool amd spend the weekend there to watch the match as Kiev is just a bit out of my financial capabilities at the moment.

That's defo fair enough Wayneo.

For me it'll very much depend on the draw, timing, venue etc if I go away to the game or not. It's hardly going to be a humdinger of a game so timing and venue will swing it for me.

I didn't bother with the Carlow game last year, as a Saturday evening in Portlaoise just wasn't my cup of tea. Had the game been fixed for Carlow on bank holiday Sunday afternoon I almost certainly would have gone.

A first final since 05 Wayno, you sure your right their pal? Or are you just a bow in Liverpool supporter?

If we did we'd be top of the league runaway leaders.

They just can't handle the Big Club.

He's a decent player, about the only attacking spark they have this year.

Hopefully Rovers don't ruin him.
