All Ireland Hurling Final 2013 - Clare v Cork

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Didnt think we would get here yet but by god it's great to be there and deserves its own thread! Hon Clare!

Will we line out the same or spring a surprise! I hope Conlon is 100% after picking up an injury the last day! My guess is that our two defensive lines really pick themselves for this with Donnellan to remain a sweeper!

We must be so difficult to play against as we are quite unorthodox.

The last game against cork is still fresh in our minds but from a psychological perspective how will this affect the lads?

IMO whoever had that typhoon at there backs that day was always going to win that game!

Jimmy v Fitzy - Let the battle commence!!!

I wish Dellboy. Unfortunately I wont be able to. I will be back in Ennis at Xmas so if they win I will do my celebrating then although there is enough of us Clare lads here too to organise our own homecoming should they win - a sign of the times.

its 50/50 really. Clare have come on a lot since Cork beat them in Munster. The team have got used to playing under Davys style since then and he has got the players positions and their roles spot on. I was thinking today if you offered Davy Fitz anyone of the six Cork forwards he might make a case for Pat Horgan but he wouldn't take anyone else, and Cian Dillon marked Joe Canning and Declan Hannon out of the game against Galway and Limerick so he'll have no problem on Pat Horgan. The Clare players are good enough to win their own individual battles all over the field. I think Davy Fitz will get his match ups spot on again and Clare will win it by 5

Hearing that brian murphy will start the final for cork, if he does i would expect him to go straight into center back. the 2 options i think they have for who he will replace are kenny and joyce, i think joyce will be the player to lose out as he hasnt been dominating games from center back and has gone missing on occasions in games, while kenny has not been in superb form either i would expect him to keep his place due to his invaluable experience to this young cork team.
positioning of tony kelly will then be key as we know murphy did very well on him in the munster game. kelly was excellent at midfield against limerick but he was being marked by one of limericks older less mobile players in the first half which really suited kelly. but against cork if he is moved to midfield he will not find it as easy to break free as mcloughlin and kearney are two very good hurlers who are also very mobile and will run all day as kelly and galvin would. i think colin ryan should revert to midfield allowing kelly to move towards the wing on tom kenny - but obviously not staying wing forward, playing a loose role where he can move into space. then podge can come to center to occupy murphy, leaving (probably) o'sullivan loose at corner back. this is more or less how clare lined out against galway. another key issue is pat horgan. he is corks main man, the fact that he will play in the full forward line and wont come deep is something that is an advantage to clare as it will make it easier to close him off with the sweeper system when he just plays inside. jbm may opt to do something like play a two man full forawrd line - bringing lehane deep around midfield, thereby leaving 2 clare defenders loose. this would mean cork should definitely win the midfield battle and forcing clare to change the system, although to do this cork would be more or less sacrificing the services of horgan as it would be 4 backs v 2 forwards inside, so im not sure if cork would do that its just a suggestion as to what might happen

I literally can't wait for Sunday. The nerves are getting to me already. Cork are a serious team we know but we can do it.

I just want to wish the Clare team all the best for Sunday and hope you bring Liam across the Shannon on Monday evening.
I have some doubts about the sweeper system as it limits the threat of Honan & McGrath, your most potent goal scorers. Davy may have to go man to man if Cork get a 5 or 6 point lead.

Best wishes to Clare on Sunday and be great to bring back the cup to the county on Monday.
Very good to see messages of support coming from outside the county including many loyal posters from Limerick.
Much appreciated guys and hopefully we can return the compliment in the very near future.

I hope Clare win if for no more reason than Cork have won enough and I don't want to have to listen to Cork folk run down Limerick's victory in the Munster final. I see the game as a very tight one and I hope that Clare have the ambition to go for it and to try and break down the Cork defence which I think is a weak link. I don't think that Clare can win by relying on a defensive strategy alone. The way to beat a sweeper in my view is to make him redundant and Clare could get outnumbered in the middle of the field if they go with 7 backs on just 5 forwards. They need to get ball to Honan and support him.
