Underachieving Clare

(Oldest Posts First)

After Winning all-Irelands back in 95 and 97 Clare Hurling seems to have hit an almighty low. They are now the 5th munster team and have benn relegated from Division 1. Its hard to see how Clare can improve. As people have spoken about for years Clare have a weak underage set up. The two ai's were a great opportunity for the county to improve, but its gotten worse

A valid point but on the subject of Clare being the 5th team in Munster I have to say that this time last year Clare were also considered the 5th team and they went on to beat Waterford and Limerick and should have beaten Cork. However with the loss of Frank, Lynch and Quinn from last years team, its hard to see anything happening this year.
From an underage point of view, Clare won the minor all-ireland in '97 and none of that team are playing with the current senior team so underage success doesnt always guarantee senior glory - Limerick won 3 all-ireland u21s not so long ago - when was their last senior all-ireland? 1973? (Sorry for using Limerick as an example mike).
As for relegation to div2, Mike Mac took the league for granted and has nearly ruined our preparations for 2010 championship subseqeuntly. Playing Kildare and Westmeath (both losers to Mayo in recent weeks) is no way to prepare for a Munster championship. Not to mention there's only one promotion spot and Wexford are in the division.
Roll on Tipp or Cork!

Hurling in towns such as Ennis & Shannon is very poor too many other attractions too many kids from the Celtic Tiger. County Board has no interest in it should have appointed good quality hurling coaches and develope a proper schools programme same in Limerick City I imagine. If Clare are any type of example look at the winners of Senior Championship last two years Tulla, Clonlara rural clubs who will follow Clooney ? Inagh/Kilnamona ? Newmarket ? County Boards are full of aging men with the same old ideas of the 1950/60s no vision of course the parents are also hugely to blame kids rule the roost play stations x boxes before a bit of effort on the field. Children are too lazy to learn the skills of hurling
