A GAA club in north Belfast has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of one of its players.

Francis McStravick, from Mayfield Village in Newtownabbey, died on Thursday. The 25-year-old was a talented player with both Patricks Pearses GAC and Beann Mhádagháin FC.

A statement from Patrick Pearse's GAC paid the following tribute to the deceased: "Francis McStravick was a member of Patrick Pearse's GAC for over 10 years. Francis was a skilled footballer - if not the best trainer - and was brave and committed on the pitch.

"Despite not playing for the club for several years in his early 20s, we were delighted when he once again started wearing the Green and Yellow of Pearses within the last year.

"His wit and infectious smile were invaluable additions to the club and his love for an argument ensured there was always craic when he was around. Many of our senior footballers also play soccer alongside Francis for Beann Mhadagáin FC and we are united in grief with our friends in Beann Mhadagáin at this sad time.

"At 25 years of age, Francis was in his prime and in such a lively character, the room was always brighter. Our deepest condolences go to Francis's family and his many friends. Coladh sámh a chara."

Requiem Mass for Francis will take place at 10am tomorrow at St Bernard's Church in Glengormley followed by interment in Carnmoney Cemetery.
