Mullingar Shamrocks GAA Notes

June 13, 2026

L to R: Pat Collins, Secretary Mullingar Shamrocks Under-age Committee, Donnacha Doyle, Seaghán óG Collins (note spelling) Garrett Doyle, Secretary of Mullingar Shamrocks, and Gavin Mooney.

Congratulations Anna

Pride of place this week belongs to Anna Jones who has been named The Croke Park Hotel/LGFA Player of the Month award for May.

This is a wonderful and deserved honour for a brilliant footballer and great all-round sportsperson whose range of skills are as good as any player.

It is also the first time a Mullingar Shamrocks player received such a prestigious award.

Anna produced a player-of-the-match performance against Wexford in the TG4 Leinster Intermediate final on May 16 as the Westmeath retained the provincial crown.

And Westmeath have carried that excellent form into the All-Ireland series - with a home quarter-final already secured. Victories over Monaghan and Louth have sent Westmeath through as table-toppers in Group 2 - with Anna dominating midfield, and contributing 1-4 over the course of their two games.

Thanks to MODUS

Our Under-Age Committee Secretary, Pat Collins was on a roll this week as he accepted a second set of jerseys, this time MODUS were the sponsoring company with the set intended for our Under-14 squad.

Garrett Doyle, Secretary of Mullingar Shamrocks made the presentation; Donnacha Doyle, Seaghán óG Collins (who accepted the jerseys on behalf of his Granddad) and Gavin Mooney were on hand to model the jerseys. Again the design incorporates the plan for our new development at Robinstown and no doubt the lads who wear these jerseys will play much of their football in the new pitches.

ACL Div. 5: Mullingar Shamrocks 5-9 Castletown-Finea/Coole Whitehall 0-16

Another successful ACL Div. 5 campaign ended in an eight point victory over CFCW.

It was a league campaign that introduced several players to adult football and provided some veteran footballers to roll back the years by donning the boots once again. Plenty of players were available on most occasions and Gary Corroon didn’t have to dig too deeply into his comprehensive contact book. Amin Hacini (whose work rate was impressive) and Peter Finch (who suffered a serious leg injury in training with Westmeath Under-20 hurlers last February that was fortunately diagnosed by sharp medics) made their first starts of the season in this outing. It’s great to see both players back in action. Amin was a solid midfield player when Mullingar Shamrocks won the Minor title in 2023 before taking a sabbatical from football.

Victory on this occasion was made possible with four first half goals; two from ace poacher Tommy Daly, (the first created by a searing Nathan Cornally solo-run, the second with a sublime finish),   one from Daragh Hughes and the fourth from Donal O’Donoghue who rose highest to punch past the CFCW goalkeeper Martin Egan from a Ross Corroon 45 (this is the same Donal who won his first Senior championship with Mullingar Shamrocks in 2000 and several more important medals since then). Trevor Keena knocked over two points and a CFCW breach provided Ross Corroon with another opportunity to display his kicking skills. Ross delivered the two-pointer. At the other end, Liam English produced two fine saves to deprive CFCW of two goals. Mark Cunningham’s two-pointer from long range was the CFCW score of the half. At the interval Shamrocks held a 4-4 to 0-4 lead.

The second half was a tighter affair with CFCW hitting a few fine scores as they outscored Shamrocks 0-12 to 1-6 without ever troubling Philly Shaw who emerged between the posts for the second half as he made his seasonal debut.  A great two-pointer from play by Aidan Daly was the highlight.  Daragh Hughes added a second goal to his tally, Tommy Daly pointed twice and only a great save by the CFCW goalkeeper deprived Tommy of his hat trick.  Brian Farrell, Nathan Cornally, and Alex Sheerin also added points as Shamrocks crossed the finishing line leading by 5-9 to 0-16.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Liam English (Philly Shaw); Eamon Breslin, Jack Kelly, Peter Finch; Amin Hacini, Conn O’Hanlon (Matthew Shaw), Jack Toal; Ciaran Kiernan, Nathan Gavin (Neil Hannigan); Nathan Cornally (0-1), Donal O’Donoghue (1-0), Ross Corroon (0-2) [Brian Farrell, 0-1]; Trevor Keena (0-2) [Alex Sheerin, 0-1], Darragh Hughes (2-0), Tommy Daly (2-2).

ACL Div. 2: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-17 Castledaly 2-12

The 2026 ACL season ended with an injury time goal loss to Castledaly on Thursday in Springfield. Mullingar Shamrocks won 14 of the 27 games played across the Div.1, Div.2 and Div.5 of the ACL and drew twice. In the process we scored m aggregate 463 points and conceded 418 points. It was a good campaign with a place in the Div. 1 secured, survival in Div. 2 (the object of the exercise) and we just missed out on a place in the Div. 5 final.

There was a lot of positives on offer against Castledaly, especially in the first half when Shamrocks led by 0-15 to 1-4 at the break. Gavin Pierce pointed in the second minute after great work by Donnacha Maguire. This was followed by a wonderful Efe two-pointer – an outside of the boot effort straight from the book of Denis Corroon’s sublime skills. Clearly, there is no limit to Efe’s talents – two rocket shots on the run in the second half that blasted off the post were wonderful pieces of football skill. Effe’s two-pointer was followed by another double from Donnacha – it might even have been a better effort than Efe’s. Nathan Gavin pointed before Trevor Keena added a third two-pointer to the mix midway through the half to give Shamrocks an 0-8 to 0-2 lead. Aaron Nugent pointed for Castledaly; it was then Ross Corroon’s turn to kick a two pointer – a might free kick from a distance. Ross added a single point before Castledaly tore through the Shamrocks defence and Aaron Sheerin finished to the net, for a crucial score. It kept Castledaly in the game.  Efe added his second two-pointer and Gavin Pierce and Conor Heffernan added points to bring the interval score to 0-15 to 1-4.

Castledaly opened with a two-pointer from Kevin Stone and a pointed 45 from Alan Stone before corner-back Ben Sheerin pointed for Shamrocks after a great pass into space by Neil Hannigan. George Kearney pointed twice and Conor Heffernan pointed for Shamrocks – it was to be the last score of the evening (0-17 to 1-10).  Efe’s effort rocketed off the post to Gavin Pierce who also rattled the post and Castledaly escaped. Aaron Nugent and Adam Turley pointed to bring the score to 0-17 to 1-12 as Mick Gordon signalled 4 minutes of injury time. Efe again rattled the post and from the restart Castledaly recovered possession and a combined move ended with Aaron Sheerin shooting his second goal of the evening,  a score that secured the lead for Castledaly for the first time and the victory that guaranteed Castledaly’s place in the ACL Div. 2. They never looked like a team threatened by relegation from the division. In a match played at near championship intensity, the men from the south were hungrier, more aggressive and physically stronger and for our younger players the match provided a good lesson in what adult football is all about.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Eoin Doran; Dónal Lane, Davy Coyne, Ben Sheerin (0-1) [Peter Finch]; Matthew Shaw, Conn O’ Hanlon, Efe Siode (0-4); Nathan Gavin [Dylan Carey], Donnacha Maguire, (0-3); Neil Hannigan (0-1)[Ciaran Kiernan], Trevor Keena (0-2), Brian Farrell; Conor Heffernan (0-2), Ross Corroon (0-3), Gavin Pierce (0-2).
