Mullingar Shamrocks GAA Notes

April 20, 2026

ACL Div.2: Milltownpass 2-12 Mullingar Shamrocks1-8.

Another ACL match played in appalling weather conditions, with wind, rain and cold more appropriate to mid-winter than mid-April.

Mullingar Shamrocks faced wind and hill in the first half and trailed by 2-7 to 1-2 at the break. Shamrocks were first to register a socre; a series of twenty or so passes ended with a Gavin Pierce point. Shamrocks came close to adding to their total when a great run by Trevor Keena ended with Trevor hitting the post. Milltownpass took control as Shamrocks were unable to gain possession from their restarts and with Finbarr Coyne, the creator in chief, scored 2-3 without a Shamrocks response. These were the crucial scores in what was a well contested match and a very good Shamrocks performance against a good Milltownpass side.

Oisín Coogan and Aidan O'Brien goaled and Finbarr Coyne and Emmet Brennan hit points. Shamrocks were also reduced to 14 players at this stage which added to the challenge. Matthew Shaw pointed; a great Efi run from deep in defence ended with a fine save from the Milltwonpass keeper but Gavin Pierce was on hand to finish to the net (2-3 to 1-2). Milltownpass added 0-4 before the half-time whistle with the electronic scoreboard reading 2-7 to 1-2.

Shamrocks dominated the second half and points from Gavin Pierce (0-2) and Brian Farrell reduced the deficit. A number of good saves by the Milltownpass keeper were important for the result. A couple of Milltownpass points were neutralised by a massive two-pointer from Alan Cashman. Nathan Smith pointed but Milltownpass responded with 3 points before the final whistle.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Ryan Blundell, Efe Siode, Dónal Lane; Ciaran Kiernan (Ben McNamee), Conn O' Hanlon, Pierce Corroon; Alan Cashman (0-2), Nathan Smith (0-1); Andrew Shaw (Conor Fitzpatrick), Killian Mooney (Tom Daly), Brian Farrell (0-1), Matthew Shaw (0-1)[Padraig Casey]; Gavin Pierce (1-3), Trevor Keena.

LGF Division 1 League: Mullingar Shamrocks 2-6 The Downs 1-13

A fine performance by our senior LGF team that with a bit of luck might have secured a league point or two as Shamrocks held a one-point lead as the game entered its final stages.

However, what’s important is the performance was good. Poor decision making at times proved costly. Zara Corroon (who retired injured) and Chloe Smullen were the goal scorers and Holly McCormack (0-2), Karen Hegarty (0-2), Susanna Buckley and Chloe Smullen chipped in with points. Susanna Buckley was outstanding, Annmarie O’Reilly was powerful at midfield and Clara Thornton continued with the good solid goalkeeping she unveiled against Rochfortbridge.
