Feile na nGael Camogie Competition - D1
Lough Lene Gaels was one of five teams that participated in the Division 1 Group phase of the Westmeath Feile na nGael Camogie competition along four other teams.
The four teams alongside Lough Lene Gaels consisted of, St Munnas/Ringtown, Clonkill, Castletown Geoghegan and Drumraney. Fixtures were played on a single round basis at McCabe Park, Turin on Sunday April 12th. Lough Lene Gaels and St Munnas/Ringtown qualified to contest the Division 1 Feile na nGael Camogie Cup final, that was played at Decotek Park, Collinstown on Monday evening, April 13th.
Lough Lene Gaels and St Munnas/Ringtown served up a high standard match of Camogie, played with a large number of spectators in attendance, whose presence created a magnificent atmosphere. The teams were on level terms at half time, Lough Lene Gaels 1.01 St Munnas 1.01. Aimee O’Neill 1.00 and Sarah Louise Murtagh 0.01 were the Lough Lene Gaels first half scorers. A second Aimee O’Neill goal put Lough Lene Gaels 2.01 to 1.01 ahead six minutes into the second half.
St Munnas responded in the closing quarter of play by scoring a point, and then a goal, gaining possession of the match lead by a one point margin as a consequence as the end of normal playing time. Lough Lene Gaels seemed to be heading towards a defeat, as the momentum of match play was certainly now in favour of St Munnas/Ringtown. Lough Lene Gaels proceeded then to draw though on the traits in their possession of resilience and self belief, levelling the match scoreline via a Aimee O’Neill point (45m award), before team captain Sarah Louise Murtagh scored what was fated to be the match winning point for the Purple and Golds.
Amidst an aura of both delight and to be frank and sincere, also relief from a Lough Lene Gaels perspective, Lough Lene Gaels team captain Sarah Louise Murtagh was presented with the Division 1 Feile na nGael Camogie Cup by Westmeath Camogie Board Chairperson Deirdre Clarke. Leinster Intermediate Camogie Championship
Lough Lene Gaels Camogie club was represented on the Westmeath panel of players that contested a quarter final match of the Leinster Intermediate Camogie Championship, Westmeath v Kildare, played on Sunday April 19th.
Match venue was the Kildare’s Hawkfield centre of excellence, located near the town of Newbridge. Westmeath 4.08 Kildare 0.07 was the half time match scoreline. Westmeath 6.14 Kildare 0.12, was the match result. Lough Lene Gaels Camogie Club warmly and sincerely extends its congratulations to the Westmeath panel of players and team management on the result v Kildare. Westmeath will now play Meath in a semi final match of the Leinster Intermediate Camogie Championship, a semi final fixture that is scheduled to be played next Saturday April 25th.
All Ireland U16 (B) Camogie Championship
Lough Lene Gaels Camogie Club was represented on the Westmeath panel of players that was selected for a semi final fixture of the U16 (B) Camogie Cup Championship, Westmeath v Armagh, played at Meath’s Dunganny GAA centre of excellence, located between Trim and Navan, played on Sunday April 19th.
Westmeath 1.09 Armagh 0.11, was the match result, a win for Westmeath by a margin of one point. Lough Lene Gaels Camogie warmly and sincerely congratulates the Westmeath panel of plans team management on that semi final victory v Armagh. Westmeath will play Kildare in the All Ireland U16 (B) All Ireland Camogie Cup Championship final.
