Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha/ The Joe McDonagh Foundation.
Is scéim tacaíochta de chuid Ghlór na nGael agus de chuid an Chumainn Lúthchleas Gael í Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha le haghaidh clubanna CLG ar mian leo an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn.
The Foundation is here to help develop the promotion of the Irish language in clubs, in a more measured and planned fashion. Glór na nGael offers help to the Oifigeach Gaeilge to give them direction, support and ideas to build on the work that has already been done within the club. Grants are available from the Foundation to help realise club plans and medals are awarded to clubs for various levels of achievement in promotion of the language.
This year, in 2024, Baile Uí Chumaoil registered with the Foundation and a working group – our Grúpa Gaeilge - was formed to organise language promoting activities. The members of the Grúpa Gaeilge are Catherine Daly, Shannon Farrelly, Evan Farrelly, Shaunagh Maher, Joanne McCormack, Bláthnaid Daly, Naomi Fitzpatrick and Kelly Dobson.
The club undertook a survey with members regarding Irish Language within the club, during April and used the results to help guide activities.
Taking into consideration the demands and language needs recognised in the survey as well as the aims of the Executive Committee, the following vision statement was agreed, Ag Cruthú Spás don Ghaeilge (Making space for Gaeilge) for the club’s Irish Language Plan.
This vision statement demonstrates that our members will have an opportunity to use and learn the Irish language through our various club activities and that the language will have an important place in the life of our club.
Scór and Scór na nÓg have formed a central and very important part of our club activities for a number of years. We will continue to offer opportunities to club members and members of our locality to participate in Scór competitions. We held a successful Scór na nÓg workshop on the 25th of August, and new participants were recruited as a result of their attendance at this workshop.
In March 2024 we organised Oral Irish practice session for Leaving Cert students in the locality and we organised a weekly ‘Ciorcal Comhrá’ at the beginning of the summer. We hope to resume the ‘Ciorcal Comhrá’, possibly in the New Year. We plan to continue to offer these opportunities in the future.
We applied for and received 2 grants – One was used to fund the purchase of signage – Fingerpost signs for the pitch and signage ‘As Gaeilge’ at the pitch, displayed on the dressing rooms.
The 2nd grant was to cover the cost of a series of Drama Workshops for children aged 9 to 12, being run over 5 Friday evenings in Fore NS. The first workshop was held on Friday, November 22nd and continue each Friday. They are being facilitated by Blathnaid Daly.
We were delighted to receive word that we were being awarded the Bronze medal for our work this year. This was be presented at an awards function in Croke Park last Friday evening, which was attended by Sean and Catherine Daly, on behalf of the club. Baile Uí Chumaoil was one of two Westmeath clubs presented on Friday night, the other being Na Dúnta.
Many thanks to our Grúpa Gaeilge and to all who helped out with the various initiatives over the course of the year. We plan to continue with many of these, and others, throughout 2025.
