Minor Div. 1 League Final: Mullingar Shamrocks 2-13 Tubberclare 2-6.
An eventful Saturday afternoon in Springfield as Mullingar Shamrocks collected a second league title in four days with a deserved victory over Tubberclare.
We are finding our feet again. The foundation of the victory was laid down in the opening quarter (just as Tubberclare did last year in the county minor semi-final) as Shamrocks established an 0-6 to 0-1 lead. In these opening minutes Paul Keating retired injured and was replaced by Alex Sheerin. Ben McNamee opened the scoring with a fine point and Gavin Pearse doubled the lead when he collected the rebound from a Ryan Kelly shot that smashed off the crossbar.
The restart was collected by Conor Heffernan who pointed. Ryan Kelly added another point and Ben McNamee added another spectacular score to his opening effort. Paul Keegan pointed for Tubberclare; Conor Heffernan responded with two great points from close to the end line – two of the scores of the day, one a replica of the other. Two crucial scores followed as Ryan Kelly, Gavin Pearse and Callum Rigney Clyne combined to send Criostóir Ormsby through on goal and the big midfielder made no mistake and netted for Shamrocks opening goal. Donnacha Maguire’s interception was crucial in beginning the move. Minutes later a superb Gavin Pearse (lucky to escape a red card in the early stages) pass set up Donnacha Maguire who finished in style for a great second goal. Ben McNamee pointed for the third time, Gavin Pearse pointed a free and from the restart Alex Sheerin gained possession, passed to Ryan Kelly whose shot again smashed off the crossbar.
At the other end a quickly taken free was superbly saved by James Flynn on the Shamrocks goal-line, one of several great pieces of play by the corner back who was one of the stars of the day. Tom Bourke pointed twice for Tubberclare who trailed by 2-9 to 0-3 at the interval.
A superb cross-field pass by Ryan Kelly to Callum Rigney Clyne sent the speedy wing forward free for Shamrocks’ opening second half point after Luke Raeside made a great turnover. Paul Keegan pointed for Tubberclare, Alex Sheerin and Donnacha Maguire did likewise for Shamrocks and extended the lead thirteen points (2-12 to 0-4). Twenty scoreless Shamrocks minutes were to follow. Tom Bourke pointed a free as a bit of complacency and sloppiness became apparent in Shamrocks play that made for an interesting and slightly nervous final few minutes. Gary Brannigan was black carded, Tom Bourke converted a penalty and added another point from a free.
A tackle by Callum Rigney Clyne led to a second penalty and a black card for Callum that reduced Shamrocks to thirteen players. This time Tom Bourke’s penalty was well saved by Adam Buckley but the midfielder was quickest to react and netted from the rebound to reduce the deficit to six points (2-12 to 2-6). A big catch from Criostóir from the restart settled the nerves and began an attack that ended with a Pádraig Casey point which was followed by the final whistle.
A great victory and a welcome Div.1 minor title; no doubt we will meet Tubberclare again in the championship when this result will be of little relevance. Shamrocks impressed with their work- rate and combination play. The manner in which the players and pushed up and refused to concede the restarts was important and impressive.
Well done to the management team of Tom Ormsby, Derek Sheridan and Paul Chrisite.

Under-15 Div. 2 League Final: Mullingar Shamrocks 6-9 Killucan 3-3.
A convincing victory for the Mullingar Shamrocks boys in this Under-15 Division 2 League final played in Springfield on Tuesday evening. The victory margin of 15 points was somewhat flattering and did not reflect the efforts of the Killucan boys particularly in the first half when the visitors created numerous scoring opportunities but poor finishing, the woodwork and great defending limited their first half total to 2-2.
Dylan Dixon opened the scoring with a fine long range point for Killucan. In the sixth minute a superb run down the sideline and along the end-line by Hugo Corroon unhinged the Killucan defence and a knock back by Rory Kilmartin was collected by Paddy Colleary who shot to the Killucan net. Rory and Ted Aherne added points as great defending kept the Killucan forwards in check. One bout of defending included a foot block and Dylan Dixon made no mistake from the penalty spot (1-2 to 1-1). Ted Aherne and Donnacha Briody exchanged pointed frees before Declan Noonan and Paddy Colleary combined to create a goal scoring opportunity for Hugo Corroon who smashed the ball past Tyler Flynn in the Killucan goal. A brilliant save from Flynn deprived Rory Kilmartin of a goal before Tom Shaw ended a great bout of individual play by smashing the ball to the Shamrocks net, a goal that took the half-time score to 2-3 to 2-2 in favour of Shamrocks.
Ted Aherne and Hugo Corroon scored early second half points before Donnacha Briody notched a similar score for Killucan. Hard work by Conor Walsh created a chance for James Ryan and the hardest working player on the field pointed; Hugo Corroon collected the restart and pointed to extend the gap (2-7 to 2-3). Sloppy defending gifted Dean Geraghty a third Killucan goal. Rory Kilmartin followed with two goals, the first when he superbly fielded a high delivery from James Ryan, turned and crashed the ball to the net, the second when he collected a superb long range Hugo Corroon pass and finished in style. A foul deprived Rory of his third goal and the resultant penalty was expertly converted by Ted Aherne and a mazy solo-run by Ted was rewarded with a second penalty and Ted’s penalty kicking expertise was again rewarded with a second goal. Hugo Corroon and Ryan McNamee completed the scoring. Ryan’s point completed a move that began deep in the Shamrocks’ fullback line by the high fielding James Ryan, the man who was everywhere on the night.
The league title was a reward for a solid team performance supported by some great individual performances. Liam Heffernan and Zak Coyne anchored the defence from fullback and centre back respectively and were well supported by Rian Sheeran, Harry Tilson, Darragh Ryan and Seán Hickey on the flanks. Behind them Óisin Gavin was secure in his handling and his restarts were top class. The high fielding Rory McCaul and the hard working James Davitt dominated midfield whilst Rory Kilmartin, Ted Aherne and Hugo Corroon dominated the scoring, Paddy Colleary and Declan Newman inflicted considerable first half damage as James Ryan roved the field to great effect. Other panellists also contributed and made it possible to reach the final stage with their input throughout the campaign.
And of course none of this would be possible without the input of the management team of Adrian Regan, Barry Maguire, Oliver Keating, Seamus Wallace, Barry Kelly and Derek Sheeran. Well done to all.

ACL Div. 1 Mullingar Shamrocks 0-11 Coralstown-Kinnegad 0-14
Mullingar Shamrocks completed their ACL Div. 1 campaign in Springfield on Sunday morning with a solid display against Coralstown-Kinnegad in what was an excellent game of football characterised by several high quality scores from both sides.
Wind-assisted Shamrocks began slowly and conceded three points to the direct running Kinnegad men in the opening minutes courtesy of Darren Giles (0-2) and Brian Cooney. Shamrocks settled into the game and a great catch by Paddy Fagan created a chance for Killian Daly who pointed. A series of controlled passes involving several players concluded with a Denis Corroon point and a catch, turn and shot by Jordan Warde for a point brought the sides level. Two pointed frees by Darren Giles restored the Kinnegad lead before Paddy Fagan added another point to the Shamrocks number. Points by Shane Fleming and Rory Cole restored Kinnegad’s three point lead (0-7 to 0-4). Shamrocks controlled the next ten minutes or so and outscored Kinnegad 0-5 to 0-2 before the half-time whistle. Killian Daly and Brian Cooney exchanged points before Denis Corroon pointed twice from frees. Conor O’Brien collected from Lorcan Smyth’s sideline delivery and equalised and Kilian Daly’s third point of the morning secured the lead for Shamrocks. It was short lived as a point from play by Rory Cole levelled the match at 0-9 each when Alan Coyne blew the half-time whistle.
Denis Corroon and Wayne Fox exchanged points before a John O’Reilly point restored the Shamrocks lead (0-11 to 0-10). Unfortunately, this proved to be Shamrocks last score and four unanswered points by Fox, Darren Giles (0-2) and Brian Cooney secured the league points for the visitors. A great goal-line block by Conn O’Hanlon is worthy of mention and in our final attack Denis Corroon’s blasted free was saved on the goal-line.

LGF Under-16 League: Mullingar Shamrocks 11-7 Shandonagh 6-15
Monday proved to be another good for day for our Under-16 LGF team in Springfield when the opposition was Shandonagh and in another high scoring classic the girls came out on top. LGF was the real winner with a combined score of 17-22 the players on both teams are due great credit for the attacking skills on display on the night.
The first quarter was played at a fast pace with Shandonagh getting the first two points from play, Shamrocks worked hard and passed well and got two points from Molly Maguire and a goal from the boot of ace goal scorer Grace Daly who finished the night with 6 goals to her credit. In the second quarter Shamrocks stepped up the pace and skill and caught many of the kick outs in the half forward line and midfield. These were fed quickly and accurately into the full forwards who stayed in close range of the goals. Niamh McDermott got a hat trick of goals, Linda Raeside and Molly Maguire added two more goals. The half forwards, midfielders and half back line covered a lot of ground and kept the ball moving rapidly. The half backs swept up everything coming their way for all of the first half and the full back line worked with incredible togetherness and prevented many attempts on goal and left opponents with no option but to go for high scores over the bar. At half time the scoreline read Mullingar Shamrocks 6-4 Shandonagh 0-8
The second half started with Shandonagh coming back strong and getting 4 quick points and 2 goals as we were down to 14 players on the field due to a sin binning event. Shamrocks intensity waned a bit and a few injuries were sustained. Shandonagh scored another three goals extending the margin at one stage to 3 points. The half forwards and midfielders worked hard in the last half of second half and provided fast accurate passes into full forward which gave Grace Daly the opportunity to score 5 goals and a point and Zara Corroon got point from play. Shandonagh scored a sixth goal and 3 more points.
It was a great game of fast paced football. Every player put in a huge performance and as a team they supported each other and came away with the win that was hard fought one.
Congratulations to the team and THANK YOU to the Coaches Johnny, John and Murty.
