This narrow win on a 5-10 to 4-7 scoreline almost copper fastens their place in the division 2 league final. A good team display and in particular a strong second half showing was the key to victory with team captain Rory McCaul leading by example and Ruairi Kilmartin, Ted Aherne, Hugo Corroon, James Ryan, Gareth Sweeney, Paddy Colleary and Zac Coyne playing influential roles. LGF Div. 3: Athlone 2-12 Mullingar Shamrocks II 1-0.
An understrength Mullingar Shamrocks second team were comprehensively outplayed by Athlone’s first team squad on Monday night in Springfield.
A combination of poor finishing and excellent defending contained Athlone in the first half and at the interval the visitors held a 1-5 to 1-0 lead. The Shamrocks goal was superbly finished by Liveta Lazauskaite following a great run by midfielder Jenna Kelly. Athlone continued to dominate in the second half but again superb defending prevented a second Athlone goal scored by the excellent Brionna Geoghegan until the final minutes. All six Shamrocks defenders excelled but the display of Annemarie O’Reilly was particularly noteworthy. Behind the defenders, goalkeeper Katie Kelly excelled and was surely the player of the match. Her handling of the ball was impeccable and her kick-outs top class. And of course there was several fine saves to add to the mix.
The referee John Joe Brady is also worthy of mention. Not many referees, if any, can match John Joe’s record … the Milltownpass man refereed his first match in 1966 (the year England won the World Cup – it’s that long ago) and uniquely has refereed in seven decades and is now as busy as ever. Remarkable.

4 to their total in the 10 minutes before half-time to leave the scoreboard reading Mullingar Shamrocks 2-3 Tyrrellspass 1-5.
The great effort of every player on the field was crucial to taking the league points.
The goalkeeper and defence lines stuck to the game plan and covered a lot of ground to keep the ball from going over or under the goal posts. Midfielders were strong in both halves and turned over many balls and fed in quick and short passes to the half forwards and full forwards who all worked really hard. Every player kept the momentum going till the last second of play.
Goals were scored in second half by Molly Maguire, Linda Raeside and Grace Daly who ended the match with a total of 2-2 to her credit.
Well done to each and every one of the players for your great team work and your never give up attitude.
