ACL Div. 1 Mullingar Shamrocks 0-14 Moate All-Whites 3-11

A tough day in the office for Mullingar Shamrocks in Moate on Sunday morning as a loss to the home side ended our recent undefeated stretch in the ACL Div. 1.

In a game played at near championship intensity, Moate got the major scores as the Shamrocks defence was dismantled on three occasions and these were the scores that made the difference. The All-Whites led by 2-6 to 0-8 at the interval after playing catch-up for the opening 20 minutes or so. John O’Reilly opened the scoring with a fine point; Robbie Forde equalised. Ross Corroon after a patient build-up kicked Shamrocks ahead with a fine long range effort; Philip King equalised. In the fifteenth minute Paddy Fagan pointed after a good break by Niall Hardiman created the opportunity; Tobby Conteh equalised.

It was now Denis Corroon’s turn to send Shamrocks into the lead and Conor Bracken equalised (0-4 each). Good defending prevented a Robbie Forde goal before Patrick Fagan added another point to the Shamrocks total and again Tobby Conteh levelled. A  Robbie Forde free in the 25th minute established a Moate lead for the first time and within three minutes a Ronan Murray goal extended the lead.  Shamrocks responded immediately with a Paddy Fagan point and a superb point by John O’Reilly. However, a second Moate goal from Conor Bracken was damaging even though Paddy Fagan again responded with a point before the interval (2-6 to 0-8).

Two points by Ross and Denis after the restart began a mini-revival but points by Ronan Murray and Eoin Bracken restored the 4 point disadvantage after fourteen minutes. Lorcan Smyth pointed off the right boot, a score that was matched by Eoin Bracken. A long range spectacular effort by Niall Hardiman with the outside of the right boot was one of the scores of the morning but Conor Bracken kept the Moate total rolling forward. Moate fullback Andrew Gorman raced forward for a point so too did Conn O’Hanlon for Shamrocks (2-10 to 0-13). However, in the final five minutes, A Robbie Forde point was followed a minute later by a second Conor Bracken goal when poor defending set Bracken free and his blasted shot ripped past Eoin Doran. A Denis Corroon free ended the scoring with Moate All-White deserving winners.

A fine display from the Mullingar girls secured two more LGF Div. 3 league points in this match played in Springfield on Friday evening. Shamrocks set the early pace and in the opening minutes planted 1-2 on the scoreboard with Jodi Aherne and Holly McCormack landing the points and Roisín O’Toole the goal. A great Laura Whitelaw point extended the lead before Moate responded with two points. Points from Laura Whitelaw and Holly McCormack restored the six point advantage which was extended when Zara Gilligan pointed and Jodi Aherne goaled before the interval. The Moate attack was limited to two points during the second quarter the product of some great defending by the Shamrocks girls. When Jim Rock called for half-time Mullingar Shamrocks held a 2-6 to 0-4 lead.

Shamrocks came close to doubling their first half total with late second half goals from Jenna Kelly and Ellie O’Sullivan Sexton. Ellie and Jenna also added points with Holly McCormack (0-3) completing the total. Although Moate scored two second half goals, the Shamrocks defending was most impressive in the second half as Moate launched several attacks that were superbly defended by the Shamrocks girls.

LGF Division 1: Mullingar Shamrocks  3-9 The Downs  2-11

Mullingar Shamrocks Ladies made it 2 from 2 last weekend with a 1 point win over The Downs in

Springfield on Sunday evening. The girls’ second match of the weekend was played in better

conditions than their Division 3 clash on Friday night however pitch conditions remained difficult

following  Saturday’s rain. Mullingar Shamrocks were slow to settle allowing The Downs build a strong early lead of 1-3 to 0-0.

This left Shamrocks chasing the game from early on however the girls stuck with the game

plan and got themselves into the match, opening their account with a free from Anna Jones. Anna

followed with two further points from frees before scoring a trademark goal. The Downs scored 3

more points in the first half, 2 from frees and 1 from play to leave Shamrocks trailing by 3 points

at half time, 1-6 to 1-3.

The second half opened with both sides exchanging points, Anna Jones scoring a further free

followed by Karen Hegarty marked her return from injury with a point from play. Shamrocks

chances of taking the points however looked unlikely when The Downs scored a second goal

following a rebound from the upright. Shamrocks were unlucky to be 7 points down at 24 minutes

but continued to press forward and their efforts were rewarded when Roisin O’Toole struck for a

goal.  Shamrocks were dominating play, launching attack after attack on The Downs

but The Downs defence held firm and this resulted in further missed scoring chances.

However Shamrocks, sensing that they would get the chance pushed hard on The Downs kickouts to regain possession. Their efforts were rewarded by a point from a free to narrow the deficit to two and then in the last minute, a goal again from the boot of the magisterial  Anna Jones secured the lead  for the first time in the match. Shamrocks won possession from the kickout and when referee Paul McAughey blew the final whistle, Shamrocks were winners by a

one point margin, 3-9 to 2-11. This was a hard fought win by Shamrocks, with some of the panel getting their second victory of the

weekend. Mullingar Shamrocks wishes a speedy recovery to Clara Thornton who suffered an injury early in the match, we hope to have Clara back in action soon.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Lauren McCormack, Melek Fagan, Siobhan O’ Donnell, Sinead Sweeney, Annemarie O’ Reilly, Tara Fagan, Susanna Buckley, Laura Whitelaw, Máiread Newman, Michaela O’ Connor, Anna Jones, (2-8), Clara Thornton (injured)(Jasmine Haugh)(Mia Gilligan), Chloe Smullen, Roisin O’Toole (1-0), Karen Hegarty (0-1).
