ACFL Division 3 v Moate All-Whites

Following successive defeats to St Malachy’s and St Loman’s, we got back to winning ways under lights in Moate last Thursday night.

Conor Delaney and Cathal Finn were the scoring stars as we edged a full-blooded contest by 1-12 to 1-11. This was an excellent victory given that we travelled down the M6 with only 17 players and were short up to a dozen players who would be considered regular starters due to a crippling injury list. The win, which was our fourth of the campaign, also preserves our Division 3 status and puts us back in the promotion mix with three rounds still to play against Maryland, The Downs and Mullingar Shamrocks.

After building up an early lead thanks to points from Conor Delaney and Shane Gorry, we fell behind when the hosts struck for the opening goal. But a tidy finish from Delaney at the other end sent us into the break with a 1-7 to 1-5 advantage.

Delaney tagged on three more points (two frees) after the restart to extend our lead to 1-10 to 1-6 before Moate cut the gap to a point. Finn then took centre stage with two massive scores either side of a brilliant save from Leon Carberry. With their substitutes and fresh legs making an impact, Moate again reduced the deficit to the minimum to set up a nail-biting finish.

But as the rain started to come down, the All-Whites’ comeback just fell short when they missed a difficult free from about 40 metres with the last kick of the game.

Team: Leon Carberry; Martin Ward, Brendan McMahon, Sean Hanlon; Micheál Coffey, Shaun Pidgeon, Arthur O’Rourke: Niall Carey, Paul Fennell; Jack Mullins, Conor Delaney, Danny Scully; Shane Gorry, Cathal Finn, Kyle McMahon. Subs: Mark Sonner and Michael Joyce.
