Ken McGrath believes Waterford would be demoted to the Joe McDonagh Cup if there was a relegation system in place in Munster.

Last Saturday’s 0-16 to 2-22 defeat to Clare – their third on the trot – ended the Deise’s Munster SHC hopes with a round still to play and McGrath was at a loss to explain their demise in an interview with WLR FM earlier this week.

“Last year, we were the second-best team in the country and now we’re down at Joe McDonagh standard. And that’s the reality of it,” the Waterford legend said.

“If there was relegation in Munster, we’d be in bother. And we can say, ‘ah, no, that’s nonsense’ but it’s not nonsense. We’re in a very bad place. The players must be feeling fragile at this stage.”

The three-time All-Star also questioned if Davy Fitzgerald was the right man to lead Waterford forward.

“If that was a Waterford man standing on the line, would he last a year? He didn’t last it four years ago when there was a Waterford man (Padraic Fanning) standing on the line so would he last it this year? In my opinion, he wouldn’t.”
