Cork made an impressive start to their Munster senior hurling championship campaign this afternoon by handing Waterford a 0-27 to 0-18 defeat at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

The Rebels earned their first championship win under Pat Ryan in style, blowing the Deise men out of the water by running up a 0-8 to 0-1 lead inside the opening 18 minutes.

From there, the scores of Robert Downey, Luke Meade and Patrick Horgan helped to send the home side towards a commanding 0-15 to 0-6 lead at the half.

Having been edged out by Limerick last weekend, the Deise men were sorely in need of a win here and manager Davy Fitzgerald introduced Austin Gleeson, Patrick Fitzgerald and Peter Hogan for the second-half.

The first three points of the restart went the way of the Deise men thanks to Stephen Bennett (2) and Jamie Barron before the former saw his goal effort cleared off the line.

Cork got motoring again though as points from Robbie O’Flynn (2) and Horgan saw them towards a comfortable opening victory.
