McKenna on brink of emulating Kennelly

Conor McKenna can emulate Tadhg Kennelly by adding an AFL Premiership title to his All-Ireland senior football medal tomorrow.

A Sam Maguire Cup winner with Tyrone in 2021, McKenna is preparing for his second AFL Grand Final in succession with the Brisbane Lions who face Sydney Swans at the MCG. In contrast to last year, however, when the Lions came up short against Collingwood, the Eglish man’s season has been disrupted by injury. That hasn’t stopped him from coming off the bench in the last three games, a role he’ll happily embrace again.

“I’d rather be playing (in the 22), but that’s my role at the moment,” McKenna told NT News.

“If I’m selected to play this week, I’d love to play from the start but if not, I’ll be the sub again and come on and have an impact like I’ve had for the past three weeks. That’s all I can do. Obviously, you’d rather be playing from the start, but it’s not that easy in this team. When we’re going well, we don’t really change much.”

Kilkenny's Darragh Joyce and James Madden from Dublin are also part of the Lions squad chasing glory.
